With all due respects, my kid might be playing at this level in a few years and I won't think it'll make any sense at all to be tracking him on a CMNT forum. Sorry but having watched every tier in Spain, and assuming France would be a step down, this is okay for a project, a kid working his way up. But barely. Gagnon-Laparé has been in our national program, he really should have moved to a higher level team, third tier at least.

Okay, did not realize that, did not used to be that way. Recall following Red Star Paris when they were 3rd tier.
I think there are two theories about this. A full national tier 3 raises the quality level, you have 18 (France) to 24 (England) so that is maybe 200-300 players with pro contracts but modest ones. It is watchable football, maybe a lot of journeymen, it is usually physical, but younger players can really learn a lot. I think England has the strongest third tier in the world, even being diluted by too many teams.
But it also causes some cost difficulties, since you have to travel a lot for your budget and level. France is an easy country to travel across, Spain is not, even with high-speed trains you are going to have teams on islands off the coast of Africa.
In Spain 2B teams struggle, as there is no glamour or prestige. You play teams from a quarter of the country, and most are not attractive beyond. I went to a 2B match Sunday with 4500 fans, but it was a stadium inauguration in a big working class suburb, Badalona, vs. the Espanyol B team. Hume's team has big crowds, but there are maybe 6-8 across four divisions with 20 teams each, maybe 8 of 80 that have strong draws, good stadiums, and capacity to handle being a division up. The rest are close to being semi-pro the way sponsorship has collapsed in Spain, they get 500 fans out and players make 30 grand a year if lucky.

Agreed, this is a distressingly low level for JGL to have landed. He should have at least have signed in Championnat National (3rd tier) which is around NASL level.
Jeffrey, unlike Spain the French 3rd tier is a single division (18 teams) and the 4th tier is 4 divisions (64 teams), so although Spanish football is superior at the top 2 tiers it is more watered down from the 3rd tier down.

I don't think you would make that comment about Scotland, but Peñarol is a S American equivalent of Rangers or Celtic, smaller league, powerful team, huge fan base, very high profile, lots of media attention. Trouble competing in Libertadores when qualifying as economically not at the level of the major Argie, Brazilian or even Colombian clubs. Peñarol has won Libertadores 5 times, but not since '87, though they played a final 5 years ago.
They've won the Intercontinental 3 times, tied for the most trophies.
Re Nacional...he was a kid there, now he is an adult and experienced. And his salary likely just went up four-fold, five-fold.

Miki Cantave has signed with RSD Alcalá, in Alcalá de Henares outside of Madrid, team in 3rd Div, 4th tier. He played preseason friendlies with the first team, and scored for the B team as seen here, in 5th tier, in a preseason match last week.
This is a step down from being in 2B, but since he hardly got minutes last season after signing hopefully he will here. He turns 20 next month, so he's young. Good group as there are B teams of At Madrid, Getafe, in the group, his exposure in the Madrid area will always be high.

Misik barely played in the 2nd league. Will be interesting to see if he can be a starter there. Probably an occasional starter/sub. Fisk is a sub, came into a team that is top of the table but has played well. Good player between the mids and striker, good at running with the ball, passing, creating plays and getting back and defending. Weakness is finishing. Can be a starter in this league. Will be interesting to see if he looks to go back overseas as he had a good run with Coruxo in the 3rd league before Deportivo.

Of course Depor is a huge club, just like Stuttgart so I've argued once. However I think Besiktas is the bigger club of the two.
But the original question was about the level. And the competition Deportivo faces is clearly higher-level than Besiktas. You can talk Champions League all you want, fact is the top half of Primera Division IS Champions League level and possible the league as a whole.
Or to put it in Wiki-terms:
    Spanish CL-Victories: 16 (11 runners up)
Turkish CL Victories: 0 (0 runners up)
13 Spanish teams have participated in the modern Champions League, against 5 Turkish clubs. Heck Deportivo participated 5 times since 2000, Besiktas 6 since '97 so that is not even that far apart, whereas it is way harder for a Spanish club to qualify than one of the traditional top-three Istanbul-clubs.

Just to add, obviously Arfield will be our highest level player in this regard.
As a Depor B player Sam is obviously getting paid more than he would at any normal Spanish 4th tier club. But I doubt he is making much more than the MLS minimum. I really don't know but pretty sure.
The advantage for Sam is that if you leave this club you have the pedigree, so it would be reasonable for him to make a move, say to a club in Spanish 2nd division, the only reasonable minimum move in Spain. I think Sam cannot go from here to a third tier anywhere, unless it is well paying like League One.
If we qualify for the Hex and he gets minutes, that takes him a notch up.
With regards to Deportivo, this is a club that has gone further in Europe than any Turkish team, ever, and has some glorious memories, including an incredible quarter final series vs. Milan (4-1 away, 4-0 home). But from over 10 years ago. They were a major importer of Brazilian talent to Europe for a while, like Bebeto and Rivaldo and Ze Roberto, they had top quality European players as well (Dutch striker MaKaay). But their economy went bad and they have suffered for a decade in the new economic model of football.
They have 3-4 defensive mids, all Spanish, one is older but good, Bergantiños, have also sent a kid like Sam up who plays a similar position, Pinchi or something like that. So there is an outside chance of him seeing first team, like early rounds of the Cup. But his job is to get Depor B into a higher division, and if they do that, they'll get a reward the following year, methinks.

I suck at appearance too, but I am very good at saying when appearance sucks!! People who know what I do professionally will know what I mean.
As a professional, then, here is my two bits: the best way of making something look really good is asking someone really good at design to design it.
Seriously, I don't think the look matters, it is fine as there is a lot of information there and it is best for it to be easy to consult,  visible on a single screen and not overly complex.

I think that the real question was primarily one of trying to come to consensus and explain things properly. It was also a question of appreciating that the Voyageurs effort in Canucks Abroad has been going on since last century and could not be altered without open discussion.
I very much appreciate how you responded to those concerns, excellently and patiently. Since then the tone of the thread has been great, and the expanded content appreciated. The format is also acceptable, very functional, not particularly attractive in presentation, but totally useful. Good work.

Ourense is a team with problems to make it into and stay in 2nd division, they seem more comfortable in 2B (third). Problem is, they were dropped a division for financial problems and disappeared 2 years ago, they now have a lower division 1st team, 5th tier I think. In fact, as I look at this, there are new splinters to refound the club, and I am not sure which one he might be with now.
If it is CD Oursense their Juvenil (u-19) A team is dead last in their top division of u-19 Spain, Honor, likely to do down to Nacional (which is still an alright level).  So in fact they are better than the senior men but slipping as the club suffers through this period of being remade.
He is represented by Rocha, RISM, from Toronto.

Well that is a surprise, did not expecct that. And could not tell you how he came to make that deal, only that their best striker, a Brazilian, Yuri, was just sold to China and they must have had a free roster spot, combined with Humey being out of contract. A couple points above relegation.
This is the team that Nsaliwa was signed to help for a few games before they went down to 2B, then came back up almost immediately to 2A. I guess Tam thought 2B was below him. They have a new coach, Nistal, who may be provisional or may stay, depending upon results.  Before they had Barragán who played with De Guzman at Deportivo, I think.
I've never been to the stadium, Toralín, but walked past it and looked in on the Camino de Santiago, as well as having been through the whole area. A pretty little town, isolated in a lush valley called El Bierzo which is geographically more part of Galicia that Castille, with wine growing, good food, a modest place though. Has an immense power plant a couple of miles out of town, used to be a mining area. Like a lot of teams in 2nd in Spain playing well over their heads in 2nd Div, but have been very competitive and as their defense is good, I think they just need a few goals and they'll stay up.
Iain has never played in this style before, it may surprise him, but he is fairly technical and has good pace so I think he'll adapt.
The fans are kiling the front office for signing him, they have no idea who he is and do not think he can help at all. One joked that Hume's only condition for signing was that he would not have share a locker with Descartes.
