Per my other link. He has signed at AS Vitré in CFA (French 4th division)

    http://www.lejournaldevitre.fr/28301/football-l-as-vitre-boucle-le-mercato-d-hiver-avec-deux-recrues/

With all due respects, my kid might be playing at this level in a few years and I won't think it'll make any sense at all to be tracking him on a CMNT forum. Sorry but having watched every tier in Spain, and assuming France would be a step down, this is okay for a project, a kid working his way up. But barely. Gagnon-Laparé has been in our national program, he really should have moved to a higher level team, third tier at least.

Their website seems to consist entirely of Uncle Sam and a Spanish translation of an apocryphal Ernest Shackleton quote when he was recruiting for an Antarctic expedition.

I think I like this club.

I saw that and could not frigging believe it, but hey, Sam's club does not have a decent webpage either. I get all data on games from the rival teams' twitter feeds. Pretty unbelievable for this level.

Hume has been called up for tomorrow's match vs. Recreativo de Huelva at home, 5 pm local time. That means his international transfer came through on time. The game will be live streamed from their Youtube account, see the link on this tweet (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S96vu6axcOo&feature=youtu.be)

Good on Hume! Looking forward to following him and wish him well.

How do folks post tweets so they appear as a tweet here? Anyways, another Canadian brought over from Lank...

    https://mobile.twitter.com/lankexperience/status/824749612862812161

You go to the right of the tweet where there is an arrow, and click on the first option, copy the tweet link. Cut and past and it comes out like this.

The first team of Albacete, whose B team Cantave signed for, is in the same division as Hume's Extremadura, but in 1st place and with good options for promotion to 2nd Div.

  4. Digging around about our Canucks in Spain, I see Miki Cantave was released by Alcalá B last November and signed early December for the 2nd team of Albacete, the team Floro took into top flight.

    http://www.aupaalba.es/2016/12/01/filial-del-albacete-mueve-ficha-del-mercado-invernal/

From what I can see he played last week, subbed on late: http://www.aupaalba.es/2017/01/22/merecido-triunfo-del-albacete-ante-almagro/

He started in a draw Jan 8th: http://www.aupaalba.es/2017/01/08/punto-comenzar-la-segunda-vuelta/

They are playing in 3rd Division, that is fourth tier, Group 18. A rival is his team from last year, Guadalajara. This is a step up as at Alcalá he was on the B team playing in 5th tier.

Ian Hume signed with Extremadura UD. Is that in the same Division as Piette @Unnamed Trialist?

Edit: Seems to be same Division Segunda División B but a different group.

Wow amazing find, thanks, I am totally amazed. At the bottom of this post I think I explain the logic of the signing.

I saw Extremadura play this year in an early Cup round at Cornellà (near Barcelona) 2nd leg, went into extra time: http://www.marcadores.com/futbol/espana/copa-del-rey/cornella-extremadura-m10365817.html

So, yes, you are right, but there is a difference: Extremadura had a nice spell in 1st division in the late 90s, and 2nd, but collapsed and disappeared and had to be refounded about 10 years ago. Had to work its way back up through lower divisions and just last year came up into 2B, in the division that includes the south of Spain (there are 4 2B divisions in Spain, Piette is in the northern one). What I saw, back in September, was a fairly technical team with nice counter attacking and ball movement, not too physical, and a nutty coach who infected his players with a lack of discipline.

Right now they are 2nd last in their group but could still avoid relegation if they get some results. They are the lowest scoring team in Group 4 of 2B. An investment group called Coinsa just bought in before Xmas so they are spending big, nine players this transfer window. The new coach is a former At Madrid and Betis player, Juan Sabas (very similar pocket size and dynamic play style as Iain).

They wear Barça colours. Play in a small town called Almendralejo which is not too attractive and a bit industrial, like Villareal. But good stadium,, rebuilt 20 years ago, and potentially good fan support. When I saw them about a hundred supporters had made the long midweek trip up to see them, that is maybe a thousand km.

The goalkeeper is Toni Doblas who is pushing 40 and used to start for Betis in 1st division, was a top quality player. Turns out Doblas was also playing in the Indian Superliga, with Delhi, both this last year and the autumn before, so that must be the connection, I am sure of it.

Edit: lots of press on this signing, seen maybe 6-7 articles. They say he had been training with a team near Manchester these last weeks. I think he still has a home in the Wirral, where Tranmere is based.

Still in the same Mickey Mouse league. But whatever, if he makes more of an impression than he did at Nacional, surely then he can make a transfer to a better league.

I don't think you would make that comment about Scotland, but Peñarol is a S American equivalent of Rangers or Celtic, smaller league, powerful team, huge fan base, very high profile, lots of media attention. Trouble competing in Libertadores when qualifying as economically not at the level of the major Argie, Brazilian or even Colombian clubs. Peñarol has won Libertadores 5 times, but not since '87, though they played a final 5 years ago.

They've won the Intercontinental 3 times, tied for the most trophies.

Re Nacional...he was a kid there, now he is an adult and experienced. And his salary likely just went up four-fold, five-fold.

Sam should leave Spain. He isn't going to make it to the top or even second division.

Well I think we have to see this out. Two years ago at Depor but in 4th tier the whole season. Last year on loan in 3rd tier to January, then back to the Depor B team, in 4th tier. This all year and starting in third tier, and the team playing way over their head. He has only not started when with Canada.

So the question is whether he is being seen by teams, and who, and if they think he could be worth a chance as a young player to move into 2nd Division. Then, clearly, he'd be at a strong competitive level and one that would be useful for Canada, as well as his finances. Playing B teams of top flight sides like Osasuna and Celta, where he is seen, as well as teams destined to be up in 2nd soon, like Santander, gives him a lot of exposure. And for sure, no doubt, scouts from other teams are watching his club, as they all know they are performing well and that they are being paid very little, the lowest budget of all clubs near them in the table.

Uday Arora was with Europa Point in Gibraltar, but he has recently signed with Leixoes in Portuguese 2nd tier

    http://www.ojogo.pt/futebol/2a-liga/leixoes/noticias/interior/amp/internacional-jovem-canadiano-assina-pelo-leixoes-5547993.html

That is quite a step up, who is this guy then?

Edit: he's from Mississauga but the web page says he has ambitions of playing for India.

  9. Miki Cantave has signed with RSD Alcalá, in Alcalá de Henares outside of Madrid, team in 3rd Div, 4th tier. He played preseason friendlies with the first team, and scored for the B team as seen here, in 5th tier, in a preseason match last week.

This is a step down from being in 2B, but since he hardly got minutes last season after signing hopefully he will here. He turns 20 next month, so he's young. Good group as there are B teams of At Madrid, Getafe, in the group, his exposure in the Madrid area will always be high.

Misik barely played in the 2nd league. Will be interesting to see if he can be a starter there. Probably an occasional starter/sub. Fisk is a sub, came into a team that is top of the table but has played well. Good player between the mids and striker, good at running with the ball, passing, creating plays and getting back and defending. Weakness is finishing. Can be a starter in this league. Will be interesting to see if he looks to go back overseas as he had a good run with Coruxo in the 3rd league before Deportivo.

Thanks for that. Luckily, a few of these matches get put on Galicia tv so we may get a chance to see them some day, it's too far away for me to see any game live though.

Piette I may go see this season though even that is over 4 hrs away...

Canucks Abroad reported that Manuel Aparicio and Patryk Misik have signed for SD Ordenes in the Spanish 4th tier:

They've lost their first two games this season.

That is interesting as its the division Fisk and Piette were in up until last year, in Galicia. This team has never been higher than 4th tier.

Just today, thinking of Misik playing in Poland 2nd tier, I was looking at a striker I follow from a Barcelona team in 4th tier, Kuku who was at Jupiter, and saw he'd signed for a team in Poland 2nd div, which surprised me. I guess we are talking about a similar level, though I am sure in Poland you'd make more money.

Any observations on how Ben Fisk has been doing in Edmonton, is that workign out? Again, curious about the equivalent levels (Sp 4th tier = Poland 2nd = NASL?).

I don't see what is wrong with this move. A starter on a Spanish 3rd division club is not a bad place for a 21 year old Canadian player. He has left a bigger club but we do not know how much he was in their plans or in those of Dusseldorf before. If you look at the average league level of our national team players he is not that far below it in the Spanish 3rd division. A good season with Izarra and he could attract interest from the 2nd division which would put him at a level as high or higher than most of our national team starters. He is in a good pyramid and needs to play to showcase himself and move up it. He may or may not do so but I don't see this as a bad move at all.

I agree, his age makes this acceptable, if he were 23-24 I would not be so sure. It also makes what he is probably making palatable (as I say, if it is 3000 euros a month that'd be about right.  Also that he will be playing against a few stronger clubs in the division (they start against Ponferradina, Hume's last club now relegated, Osasuna's second team is in it too). Of course, if they'd promoted with Deportivo B that would have been his best option.

Probably a much better chance for Piette to be in the starting XI compared to when he was at Ferrol, right?

From what his coach says, he is set for starting defensive mid role.

Thing is, he was subbing on and getting minutes at Ferrol. He was playing a role on a team leading their division, their 12th man, they actually slipped and lost the lead after he left (really hurting their promotion chances). And that team was way stronger with greater potential than this.

I think the coach doing that asshole move and subbing him off early 1st half in a match last winter just plain pissed him off, was it back in Jan I guess? That was a bad move and unnecessary, and Sam said enough.

IMO, this is not the best move for his football future, or his economy, though as I say, nice place to be and I am sure he'll have fun.

  14. Piette with his new teammates, the new signings.

They play in blue and white, started preseason training on Monday. Have a friendly this weekend.

I remember that bar, watch the game from there easily. This team is really very modest to be in third tier, if they stay up that is amazing. It is virtually impossible for them to think about promoting any higher.

  15. Learnt of this in the Curva tonight at Caps, will just repeat what I said there about Izarra, which is the Basque name for Estella.

First, I've been to that stadium, saw them play Cultural Leonesa maybe 6 years ago. Very small stadium and a bit crude and utilitarian, as pics show, but in a beautiful town I went to once on the Camino de Santiago. In Navarra, which is as Ivanovski94 says, is culturally and historically Basque, though a different region politically in Spain (Biarritz in France is also the Basque Country, for example). Damn nice place to live, Navarra has the best quality of life in Spain, best social services too.

This team is weak and its economy is not too strong, very often promotes into 2B then drops back, but last year stayed up handily, lower mid table. In Navarra the only major team is Osasuna in Pamplona, less than an hour away. All the rest are modest, though this year they'll have 4 Navarra teams in the 2B division, unusual. Piette signing comes after they played vs. him last season, when he was at Racing Ferrol. Funny, Izarra squeeked out a draw when Ferrol was leading the division, but they must have liked him. The press refers to his defensive pace above all, Izarra drops off badly away from home.

The clubs from Navarra are all very angry they've been placed in a group with lots of travelling, crossing a region that is not in their group, raising costs. Like having PEI teams play in a Quebec league and N Brunswick with the rest of the Maritimes.

In Navarra, as you'll know if you've seen Osasuna or other Basque teams, they play a more direct physical game, closer to classic English. Very often these teams in 2B have strong, experienced journeymen. I doubt Sam is making much money, if it is 50 grand CDN with the exchange I'd be surprised.

  16. Shamrock, I 100% agree, thankfully a few people here have some sense.

The whole idea of going onto Wiki and saying yo-yo really gets me, because if you said that to anyone in Spain, except maybe Deportivo's rivals at Celta, they'd laugh in your face. I could name about 15 teams that fit the bill (only three teams in Spain have never been out of top flight). But the knowledge level of Canadian fans is like that, laughable at times.

  17. Obinna, Deportivo de la Coruña is historically amongst the top 10 or so sides in the history of the Spanish league, which is most likely the best in the world. No one in Spain says they are "ascensor", that term is reserved for a few other sides.

I trust what common knowledge is here, rather than guys doing rapidfire Wiki-checks then trying to discuss this stuff. You are way over your heads.

If you don't believe me, just ask the current Canada coach or current captain. Who you are also disrespecting totally, Floro must be an idiot to be calling up a reserve player from a yo-yo team, our lowest division player on the CMNT. Julian will tell you the same thing I am: Deportivo is a major Spanish side; Getafe or Rayo or Levante are "ascensor".

If Piette gets first team minutes at Depor, being good fans, you'll insist he's playing for a yo-yo team. In fact you saying this now is dissing him before he even gets there, which is totally pathetic. Accoring to Obinna, right now Sam is reserve on a yo-yo team and plays for Canada. With fans like you we might as well all be Mexicans.

I think most Canada fans might actually show some appreciation if Sam makes it, since the accomplishment will be great.

Depor had huge debt like most important football teams when Julian was there, if I recall maybe over 100 million, lost their shirt sponsor even when Julian around as its business collapsed (real estate), and were forced into a radical restructuring with an important consequence for us: they started paying attention to their academy. They never had, nor had regional rival Celta, Galician players were few in Spanish top flight. They sold players, refused to resign--since all this affected our captain you should bloody well know, but you don't. Because it is not in a little table on your Wiki, is it now?

They brought in journeymen and called up kids from the academy. Third or fourth tier players, often loaned out a while then come back.  As they are doing now, maybe a quarter to a third of the first team is from the B (not going on Wiki-genius here, on memory). Many of the players Sam would technically replace are also academy. Basically, finances obliged them to go with what they have and thus they went down, came back up, dropped, even last year they were close. You could even argue it was part of the calculated risk.

It does not matter really. I love to watch them when they come to Camp Nou, even watched Julian when they played Espanyol in Barcelona, and am disappointed Sam and Ben did not draw a team closer to me for the promotion playoffs. Deportivo is a great team, an important club, and Canada is lucky to have Sam there.

  18. Just want to add. Atiba playing Champions and getting past the group stage will only be relevant if we get into the HEX, Atiba Hutchinson maybe in Champions knock-out rounds, but will be effectively retired from international football if can't do the job in September. And we can put this all to rest since Sam, wherever he is, will be playing at a higher level than Atiba amongst Canada pool players.

  19. 9 hours ago, Grizzly said:

I have a memory and my memory tells me that Deportivo had an exceptionally strong period in its history in the early 90s to early 2000's both in the league and European play but previous to that and since then has been mostly a yo yo club between the first and second division and usually a mid to lower table team when it is in La Liga. Not that that is bad or that playing for them would not be a great achievement for Piette but if we are going to compare them, Besiktas has consistently been one of the top Turkish league teams while Deportivo has as often as not been in the 2nd division. But yes if folks like you have a memory that only remembers 1992-2004 Deportivo they were indeed a stronger team during most of that period. In general though Besiktas has been and is currently the stronger team and are the reigning Turkish Champions while Deportivo was only 4 points away from getting relegated this season. One would think someone who is such a big soccer fan and lives in Spain would have some memory of Spanish soccer history.

You basically just repeat what I say in a post made 6 hours before yours. Just ignore my detailed post on Depor history, and go for it. Since you are up all night, pining to ring the bell at Saputo it seems, there is really no excuse.

According to Grizzly  if Piette ends up playing regularly for Deportivo, and Arfield for Burnley, and hey, even Doneil for the Hammers, they will all still be playing at a worse level than Atiba. This is genius.

You honestly think Mario Gómez playing in Spain would score 27 goals like he did at Besiktas? He did because it is easy vs. 80% of teams. He'd get 10-12 if he were lucky, same pace he had at Fiorentina. In strong leagues he is a 10 goal a year man now. That is the level.  I'd sign Lucas Pérez, leading scorer of Depor, over Gómez (his dad was actually Spanish thus the name) any day.

Right now Arfield is our top ranked player for club and playing level, even if they are relegation-threatened the whole upcoming season it'll be the case. Not surprisingly, this is actually evident on the field for Canada. Atiba has been great for us, but he has that slightly plodding pace and lack of urgency at times which is what happens when you play  vs. inferior competition 80% of the time. He has made some serious possession blunders leading to goals against so far (vs. Mex he was pretty poor). Sam, in contrast, does not look out of place for Canada while playing in crappy fourth tier Spain, which is not even pro officially.

You play for Depor you play against much higher competition day in, day out. Same in EPL. Same in Bundesliga.

This does not matter,  it is all moot, since the whole point is that Sam is very unlikely to play for Deportivo, at least not next season. All I said was that if he were to, he'd be playing at the highest club level of any Canadian. And it'd be true (or course unless Doneil has a breakout year as well, accepting West Ham is right now a stronger club in quality of players than Deportivo).

  20. Just to add, obviously Arfield will be our highest level player in this regard.

As a Depor B player Sam is obviously getting paid more than he would at any normal Spanish 4th tier club. But I doubt he is making much more than the MLS minimum. I really don't know but pretty sure.

The advantage for Sam is that if you leave this club you have the pedigree, so it would be reasonable for him to make a move, say to a club in Spanish 2nd division, the only reasonable minimum move in Spain. I think Sam cannot go from here to a third tier anywhere, unless it is well paying like League One.

If we qualify for the Hex and he gets minutes, that takes him a notch up.

With regards to Deportivo, this is a club that has gone further in Europe than any Turkish team, ever, and has some glorious memories, including an incredible quarter final series vs. Milan (4-1 away, 4-0 home). But from over 10 years ago. They were a major importer of Brazilian talent to Europe for a while, like Bebeto and Rivaldo and Ze Roberto, they had top quality European players as well (Dutch striker MaKaay). But their economy went bad and they have suffered for a decade in the new economic model of football.

They have 3-4 defensive mids, all Spanish, one is older but good, Bergantiños, have also sent a kid like Sam up who plays a similar position, Pinchi or something like that. So there is an outside chance of him seeing first team, like early rounds of the Cup. But his job is to get Depor B into a higher division, and if they do that, they'll get a reward the following year, methinks.
