    Canadian Soccer Directory

    socceronly

I have added a directory to the site for Canadian soccer clubs, leagues, associations and academies.   I will add other categories and provinces later, just testing it right now.

Associations ect are not particularly forthcoming with data on contacts in the soccer community.   So I have decided we need to build our own.

Over the next year I will be doing a significant amount of cross Canada outreach for The Voyageurs and the CanPL and a good directory will be a place to start.

We have to start building better relationships in the soccer community, and knowing where to go is half the battle.

If everyone can please first test the system to make sure it is working and makes sense, then we can make a wider push for a complete Canadian soccer directly.

    • Leave out the professional teams, that will be a new category later
    • Requires both web address and physical address - it's a PIA to coppy in an address, but super important.  (currently defaults to USA)
    • Copy in a blurb about the club or a mission statement if they have it on the site.  (use the Remove Formatting if cut & paste from a site)
    • Upload the clubs logo if you can

    http://www.thevoyageurs.org/directory/

If you have any ideas on how to improve it, please let me know.

    Thanks for you help.
    JM

Should be good to go now.

There are a few different places to set permissions.

I tried to add a record but there was no address field.

Also, what is the difference between a "club" and an "association"? I was entering Bays United which calls itself an association but I would define as a club.

And I see no way to go back and edit the listing.

Yeah there are a lot of confusing terms.  Technically speaking they are all associations I suppose.

Association would be governing bodies.  BC Soccer association, Ontario Referees ect...

Club would be an organization that runs soccer in an area for players oranizing them into teams for leagues, or running their own house leagues.

A league would aggregate teams from clubs for competition.

Hmmm.  I'll check the Address field.

I added ability to Edit records.  Once this grows a bit, I'll parse out the User groups more and keep the functionality for some.   Too many people editing records would be .... possibly bad.

Yup, works for me too now.

So the idea is that this is an open source document that we add to ourselves with information available publicly? Or are you asking people directly involved to add their own clubs to the directory?

    Public directory.

    Add anything and everything.

I will start adding some private fields for communication, and recording our interactions with clubs.

Not sure when I'll be able to find the time, but eventually Jeff and I can start adding the Saskies. Luckily we already know folks at many of the clubs.

    No rush.

This will take a long time

Can you clarify "leagues"? What is the scope? Any league where clubs are represented, no matter the age? Adult leagues only? House leagues?

Well, what do you think makes sense?  I was basing it on the following.

    Adult or Youth.

I think a club that runs a house league is still a Club.  It's a service to the members but also runs older teams in leagues.

A service like Toronto Sport Social Club that runs it's own leagues is a League even though none of the teams in it are from other Clubs in the traditional League sense.

Vancouver Men's Metro League is to me clearly a League made up of teams from Clubs.

Soccer is set up in a variety of ways to suit the locale.  It isn't always going to be clear.

Do you have an example of something that is confusing?

Do we need to parse out the Categories more?

Ah, ok. I just wanted to understand the intent.

Did you want sanctioned setups only? Did you want to include academies and their associated leagues?

I think everything should go in. We are not in the legitimacy/sanction business.

When you say academy with associated league.... what do you mean exactly.

I mean SAAC (Sigma, ANB, etc.) and CAF (DeRo academy, Epic FC, etc.).

No worries though, if you want to err on the side of inclusion that is clear enough for me.

League or association, both work - they are effectively on the same level as a district assocation.

I think there will be a lot of overlap there too. Consider omitting any league that is run by and is contained within a district association. I don't think you need a separate entry for PHDL (Peel-Halton Developmental League) and PHSA (Peel Halton Soccer Association) since any mail-out would go to the same people. Do you need an entry for TSA and TDYSL?

Hmmm.  The db categories are not flexible. I can't put things in more than one as it's not done via tagging system.

I think just use sensible discretion on a per case basis.  There can't be too many situations like that.

Hey @socceronly I noticed you put the SSA in there. Are you looking for us to add to the information there? For example they have offices in Saskatoon (in fact these may be their primary offices) and have key people etc etc.

I just added the single head office.

I don't think we need to replicate their site info.
