CPL club "Identities" / Mission Statements

So a couple of episodes back(not the last one but the one before that I believe) on footysoldiers they were talking about naming the teams and more than that sort of the club "mission statement"/"Identity" that would be the basis for each club. They mentioned "farmer johns" in regina and the regina regiment as well as privateers in halifax and how that can influence a team from the top-down so that there is always a clear purpose for how the team is going to play. Another example was the 86ers and how when they came in they said they were going to play BC guys and they were going to go for it in terms of scoring goals. I'll start off - I was thinking about Sigma Sauga - how the city is commonly understood as sort of a techhub/fortune 500 company hub and how sigma is a math symbol - this combined with seeing a tweet from the club recently where they were showing their youth players a slide show on tactics got me thinking. They could be known as precise and calculated tactically - it would go along with the Sigma thing as well as the general feel for the city. their mission statement could be something along the lines of "Our goal is to create intelligent, tactically aware players, who are capable of adapting on the fly different formations both from the opposition and from their own club, to give them a tactical advantage over the opponent - with the ultimate goal of winning, whether by defence or offence - by outsmarting the opposition". Thoughts?

    1983 CPSL Research

Over the past couple years I have been searching every nook and cranny of the internet for information on the Canadian Professional Soccer League. Thanks in a large part to the Google Newspaper Archive, I have been able to piece together the results of all but one game and attendance figures for many of the games. My hope is to write a book about this league which, while being a little more than a footnote in Canada's soccer history, is a cautionary tale with plenty of lessons to be learned. While I have been able to find many articles relating to this league, I am interested in possibly hearing from fans who actually attended CPSL games that year. If you have a story from the 1983 CPSL and would like to share it, I would love to hear from you. Proper credit will be given should my project ever result in a book. I would especially like to hear from people who were involved in the league and its teams. It doesn't matter if you were a player, the GM of a team or a ticket seller. A spoiler alert, the final CPSL standings on the RSSSF site are inaccurate. A thank you in advance to anyone who is able to help me move this project along.
  5. Our Scotiabank has signed to sponsor the Chilean soccer federation to the tune of $10 million dollars. Very nice for the south americans but why can't they better put the money to spondor our CSA and our national teams. I find this disgusting and consider Scotiabank as traitors to Canada. Fortunately I don't bank there. Source http://www.latercera.com/noticia/deportes/2014/01/656-559514-9-el-nuevo-negocio-millonario-de-la-anfp.shtml

  7. So we have two of us coming down from Nanaimo to Victoria on September 7th. Has anything been organized to watch the game at a pub? The kickoff time and being a Friday might not be convenient for a lot of people.

  11. (Look for the Voyageurs banner @ 6:21) If anyone is interested... Video shot by Red Nation Online's Gavin Day before the international friendly between Argentina and Canada on May 24, 2010. You'll have to excuse the shoddy camera work but I think it gives a pretty good idea on the scene there. You can ignore the last minute...the camera was left running so there's nothing on it but the inside of a bag.
  12. Oh gawd, here we go again. http://www.sportsnet.ca/soccer/2010/06/06/johnston_no_tell_teal_signs/ While Bunbury continues to gain experience as a pro, he remains undecided as to whether or not he will play for Canada or the United States at the international level. The son of Canadian great Alex Bunbury has played at the under-20 level for Canada, but remains uncapped as a senior player. As the United States prepares to compete for the World Cup in South Africa and Canada prepares for a 2014 qualifying run, Bunbury remains undecided on which -- if either -- country he plans to choose. "No, no update yet," Bunbury said of any decision.

    Inside the MLS: Tyrone Marshall

Veteran Seattle Sounders defender Tyrone Marshall is a two-time MLS All-Star and a two-time MLS Cup champion. After stints as a key member of the Miami Fusion, Los Angeles Galaxy and Toronto FC, Marshall joined Seattle for their inaugural season and immediately established himself as an important leader on the team’s back line. At the international level, he has been capped 69 times by the Jamaican National Team. In this interview, Tyrone and Red Nation discuss his experiences playing with Seattle, his transition from Toronto FC to the Sounders, the Jamaican National Team and going up against Canada in CONCACAF competition. http://www.rednationonline.ca/podcast.shtml#TyroneMarshall
  15. It hasn't always been easy to be a soccer fan in Canada. The mainstream media has often all but ignored the sport and many of the top Canadian sports analysts have been downright antagonistic towards it. Hockey continues to dominate the headlines and mainstream media and it likely will for many years to come. While some 80 per cent of Canadians watched part of the recent Olympic hockey final, fans of the Canadian Men's National Team had to listen to a Jamaican radio feed on the Internet in order to follow the action for Canada's recent friendly against Jamaica. At the same time, it is not difficult to understand where Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber was coming from when said that Toronto has the potential to become a soccer epicenter. http://www.rednationonline.ca/Canada_on_the_Cusp_of_a_Golden_Era_of_Soccer_apr_2_10_article.shtml
  16. Red Nation is marking the 10th Anniversary of Canada's triumphant, 2000 Gold Cup win. We've just launched a special feature that recaps the tournament, and will run interviews of particular members of that team. Today has an overview of the tourney followed by an audio interview with Carlo Corazzin on Thursday. Please check this thread to see which other members we'll be posting throughout. http://www.rednationonline.ca/CONCACAF_Gold_Cup_February_2000_10_Years_A_Look_Back_feb_17_10_column.shtml

  18. Red Nation takes a look at the younger players on the roster facing Jamaica and the long-term benefits to the CMNT program. Will supporters echo similar sentiments post Macedonia and Poland, or should we take this match as it is being billed; as an opportunity for our players to get familiar with each other and add another notch onto the belt for Canada’s thirty-ish friendlies pre-2014? Nana Attakora and David Monsalve also spoke to Red Nation about the camp and the upcoming friendly against Jamaica. http://www.rednationonline.ca/Canadas_Next_Generation_Unveiled_in_Jamaica_jan_29_10_feature.shtml
