I found an interesting graphic that someone had posted on Twitter a couple days ago. It is a calendar for the 2019 EXCEL program, but I'm not sure what the original source is:

For me, the most important parts of the calendar are the national youth team camps that are listed:

    • U18-23
      • February 15-24, Location TBD "Best With Best Camp"
      • December 2-11, Mexico City, Mexico "Best With Best Camp"
    • U17
      • March 4-13, Location TBD "Best With Best Camp"
      • April 16-23, Florida, USA "Pre-CONCACAF U17 Camp"
      • August 4-13, Location TBD "Best With Best Camp"
      • September 25-October 4, Location TBD "Pre U17 World Cup Camp"
    • U15
      • July 14-21, Location TBD "Best With Best Camp"
      • December 2-11, Mexico City, Mexico "Best With Best Camp"

That is a total of eight youth camps planned for the various youth teams this year. If you add in the CONCACAF U17 and U15 Championships this year, and potentially the U17 FIFA World Cup, we could have as many as 11 youth camps this year. This is great news for our youth programs and hopefully can put any talk of us not having enough youth camps to bed.

Looking forward to seeing the camp roster for the Best with Best camp U18-U23, whenever that might be released.

Is this calendar made by Soccer Canada or on their website?

  3. It sucks to not see the team play as many games as they can. But if it saves hundreds of thousands of dollars in order to put more effort into the organization of all men's teams and player development, then I think it's a win. I'd rather we  play in the Toulon tournament vs a senior team friendly.

Assuming that it's an U23 team with a few senior players sprinkled in:

    GK - Busti, Crepeau, Pantemis

D - Godinho, TMG, Cornelius, Edgar, Dunn, C.Gutierrez, Petrasso

M - Davies, Fraser, Daniels, Verhoeven, Telfer, Shome, M.Choiniere, Twardek

F - Reid, Millar, David, Ricketts

I picked a lot of U23 players because of their U23 experience. It would make sense that players from that pool would be in contention. Some Toulon call ups in that group too.

    Exceptions are:

Reid - hasn't played for us at any level by the looks of it, but has gotten a lot of time at Ottawa while on loan from FCD.

Also, isn't he eligible for another country, or no? Great chance to bring him in / cap-tie.

Godinho - don't believe he has U23 experience, but he's a 97 so he's eligible as far as I know. Plus he's already earned a senior cap and has done quite well, so I would think he'd be called to a camp like this. Additionally, he hasn't been able to get back into the Hearts team since his off-season surgery, so a good chance to get a game.

C.Gutierrez - A little fun surprise pick. No indication that now is the time he joins, or even if he wants to join, but ultimately I think he's ours. This is more wish than prediction.

    Older guys:

Telfer - Obvious. Must cap. Don't want to lose him to T&T. He's shown enough that I believe he is an MLS squad player at bare minimum. I think he can get even better too.

Crepeau - Great season with Ottawa. Has a few senior caps already. We need at least one keeper with senior experience.

Petrasso - he is on the outside looking in with the Impact. Supposedly going on loan. Perhaps he gets the call for this as one of the senior players who are sprinkled in.

Ricketts - Also not getting much MLS time, but has tons of experience and will set the standard and expectations for the rookies.

Edgar - same as the NZ camp. Chance to come in and work his way back into the pool. Perfect leader for this young group I think.

That would be a great lineup for a game vs. USVI. I might think about some other players too. If Godhino is not healthy enough, I might think about RB Brault-Guillard with Lyon or RB/CB Emile Legault with Celtic.

Although Jacob Shaffelburg is playing PDL, I think he deserves a call-up given his connection to the Bundesliga.

Maybe I'm overthinking, but CB Nikolas White was promoted to U19 FC Nurnberg in the Bundesliga. He might be deserving of a call-up too.

  5. I'm bored so I decided to make a line-up. Herdman, from what I remember, seems to play a 4-3-3. Just some notes detailing my thinking...

    • I think Wotherspoon will be called and probably used as a substitute. I think players like Osario, Arfield, and Piette probably start ahead of Wotherspoon on CB.
    • While I would love for Tabla to take the RW spot, I put Hoilett and David there because Tabla has yet to commit. I think David is more of a CF too, but I figure to include him in the squad, he could be penciled in there.
    • Injuries have been factored into account, so Godhino and Kaye have been omitted.
    • I have started Hutchison at CB, as this idea has been floated around the board. I think he could be solid back there.
    • At RB, Brault-Guillard should start over Legault based on being 1-2 years older. I am not sure if Petrasso has done enough to solidify himself as the go-to RB. I think if we were playing a stronger nation, Petrasso would probably start. Seeing as how we are the favourites, I thought it would be a good idea to promote Brault-Guillard and Legault to the first team. I realize this is a weak argument, and so in all likelihood, Petrasso would probably be invited with one of Brault-Guillard or Legault.
    • I want Tabla (F), Kadioglu (M), Tomori (CB), Eustaquio (M), Ferreira (CB) and C. Gutiérrez (LB) to join to address some our our weaknesses. I'm allowed to dream.

What are your thoughts? Where do you agree, where do you disagree?

    (Yes, I am serious).

I like Hutchison as the CB. I am unsure about Johnson in on RB.

I thought Tabla was more of a winger, but if he played CM that would be great.

If every player committed, who would you keep in thE starting 11 and who would you take out and replace them with?

Borjan to me always gives his all for Canada. I like him to start until his play declines.

To be a bit more realistic I suppose, I would keep all the defence the same except Ferreira because he's injured, I think. I threw James in there because he is an aerial threat.

I really know nothing about the midfielders. If Flores actually becomes a star, then he should play regardless of age. I'm not sure if Estaquio is better than Osorio or Arfield. Hoilett is in there because of that goal he scored vs Jamaica (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oF70LhFrr3I). I think Wotherspoon is probably the weakest of the bunch.

Davies is a lock to play. And I reckon Tabla would be too. And although Larin or Cavallini should probably start instead of Millar, I like his pace and haircut.

  8. Romedi Llapi is 16 years old and listed as a defender by Canucks Abroad.  He plays for Valencia Academy in Spain. According to their website, he also plays midfield and is eligible for the USA.

He was at the u15 identification camp in 2017. Recently he represented the Albanian u17 National Team at the San Marino Cup starting in all 3 games.

Prior to joining the Valencia Academy he had trials with Man City and Bolton.

I am not sure about the quality Valencia Academy, but is this a player for the future deserving of his own thread?
