That’s one goal. Also, not mutually exclusive to this very goal, I think another end goal is to develop some big clubs in the country that can pay reasonably good salaries. Cities like Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Quebec City and of course Hamilton among others have the capacity to support clubs in the 20,000 to 30,000 average attendance range and it isn’t going to happen with MLS. I obviously don’t expect this to happen right away with the CPL but establishing the framework and infrastructure so this can be achieved 20-30 years down the line is key. Forming a bunch of FC Groningen type clubs across the country would be a reasonable aspirational goal IMO.

    FC Groningen =

Exactly, developing players for the national team is important but so is growing soccer culture in this country. This great sport of ours is about more than just being the best or even being good it's about bringing the community together. As for second teams being in the league I've always been against it for multiple reasons. 1st it's bad for the league's image, it would set it clearly in minor league territory. 2nd, I don't think they would be anywhere near competitive, VWC2 and TFC2 were USL bottom feeders this year and rumor is many USL teams have total payrolls short of 700k a year. 3rd, I believe it would hurt other teams, what casual fans wants to see their local team play a 2nd team. 4th having independent teams in MLS markets would push competition more, while second teams in the league would prop up the MLS teams monopoly in the market.

However I believe at the youth level MLS teams and future CPL teams should compete together. For example I'd like to see Ontario CPL teams to put senior academy sides in L1O like TFC3 is. I'd also like to see the impact's oldest academy team along with any CPL  teams in Quebec(or Ottawa) to play in the PLSQ. I'd like to see similar things happen around the country with regional youth focused senior leagues(like L1O) being home to smaller market senior teams and pro teams 2nd/academy teams.

Ummm, didnt the talk really heat up with Rollins in 2014 with a start date 2016/2017??  Then moved to 2018 (to take advantage of WC interest), then now of course 2019.  With the way clubs have been closing in canada in the last year or so by spring they'll be saying maybe 2020.

I wasn't deeply involved in 2014 so I didn't know 16/17 was ever even discussed.

  3. I posted this in the general but also thought it made sense here.

I've made a map with all the potential CPL markets that either have either grassroots support or some sort of ownership group we know about. I've attached teams to future/potential stadium locations. I've also added a layer with road trips within the east/west. Hope you guys like this. Let me know if there's anything I could add or if anything is wrong.

Time for new ownership in Edmonton for a cpl team plain and simple..good on Fath for keeping it going these years but he's not a big money guy and doesn't want any more loses

I think He's fine, he has been willing to lose money before he/they just need evidence that there's a path to making money or at least breaking even. Canadian sponsors in the CPL will be exposed to a market much larger as home and away games will be in front of Canadians so profits from them could be much higher. Not to mention travel costs could likely be halved a season, he said a game's travel costs could be as high as 50k per game in NASL; let's say average is 25k-30k. That's 400-500k a season just for team travel where as seasons in CPL could probably cost half that.

I do think having another investor involved could be nice for for an Edmonton team but the Eddies are already pretty established and have a good academy, maybe a slight rebrand could go a long way with the improved corporate potential of CPL over NASL.

It sounds like Fath isn't sitting out and waiting for the CanPL. I think we can forget about FCE, at least for the first year (how else will Fath get the evidence he needs that it can be sustainable?).

From the league start date being pushed back twice now, to news like this, is anyone else worrying it's a false start and never going to happen? In that case should cities like Hamilton go for USL so we at least have SOMETHING in terms of opportunities for our young players?

i remember the start date going from hopefully 2018/maybe 2019 to hopefully 2019. Don't remember it being pushed back twice, hell 2018 was never more than hopefully.

I think it's actually a positive if they end up with someone to partner with for a permanent stadium. If this has legs, its going to be a bit down the road at the very least. since building a major stadium like that would require more lead time (edit: missed the 2020 target in the article). I don't think CFL would be able to sustain itself in a 7000 seat stadium, and the site is probably too small to get to that ~20k minimum CFL likely has

Maybe it lights a bit of a fire too if they know they have to rush to get a couple seasons in to establish themselves before the CFL swoops in

It says the CFL stadium is rumored to be across the river in Dartmouth, It could be a permanent location for the CPL team as the modulur stadium is definitely short term.

    Changing the conversation a bit...

I'm more than slightly terrified that someone is going to suddenly say "Hey, we have a great downtown location you could use!  But we can't have too many events there and we like the CFL more so au revoir, soccer team!"

Am I justified in this or just being silly?

The rumored spot for this stadium is different than the pop-up stadium. However i think if they build an actual stadium they would rather have more events to even out costs of a big CFL stadium. Interesting to see how this turns out.

They are but what would stop another a club from playing there? TFC only manage the bubble in the winter. Much like the Wolfpack, a CPL club could rent it as well.

3 teams playing on one surface would be a lot of wear, but it is possible. i wonder if anyone is going to put money into improving Lamport now that it will have 2 Pro teams there for at least a year.

This has been my concern from day 1. Empire lasted just over a year I believe. This one is projected to be used for 4 years. Everything I have seen has been for that short span of time. I imagine that the club likely already owns the land which keeps a bit of the cost down but I don't think that is likely the case for CPL clubs as they are just starting and will have to purchase land or build on municipal lands. I imagine a stadium would take up something close to 5- 8 acres from what I've read. So add that into the 14 million (in 2010-2011) that Empire cost and adjust according to the market and inflation .

Where did you see this was for 4 years? I imagine they will make the Saskatoon stadium semi-permanent with concrete foundation(not the stands). Think MapFre http://stadiumdb.com/stadiums/usa/columbus_crew_stadium but with modulur parts and smaller. I could be wrong but it lasting 20 years doesn't seem impossible.

I know people are in doubt about Toronto and have even further doubts about Lamport but they are replacing artificial pitch prior to the Wolfpack's home matches in 2018. Not sure if the markings will be permanent.

I'm pretty sure TFC 2 is confirmed to be moving there

Akinola gets an assist in the Round of 16 vs. Paraguay.

I still don't think he'll have a major role with the US in the future, and may well switch to Canada. But he's certainly done enough in this tournament for the US youth teams to want to keep him as a contributor for a little while longer.

Same thoughts, with the sheer amount of talent the Us has at forward for young players too. Also most YNT players won't go on to be full nationals, he'd need to pass 4-5 guys in talent that will be within the same generation.

Are there still Red Lobsters in Canada? Also everyone should read LawNewz they have some of the more interesting takes on legal matters and have one of the best W T F sections out there.

Is the NASL case on that 🙎

  14. So I finally went out to the location and got some pictures (I'll post them later when I can compile things together) smaller location is owned by the schoolboard and was very recently re-done. Parking lot location is private owned(maybe privately run not owned but I presume the first).

Is it safe to say they can draw 8-15k for a CPL game?

Well it's never safe but seeing as the stadium proposal is 8-10k(can't remember specifically) that would be the goal. Remember 8-10k sold tickets would put them at a top USL level which is very solid financially.

Just curious but how popular is soccer in Saskatchewan and Halifax? I don't really know much about the communities. Would they be able to put up good numbers in attendance?

I know the Cosmos friendly was really impressive considering the teams. Something like 17kfans for a NASL team versus a large but not super international team from Spain(Valencia)

What they're alleging is that USSF is subjectively applying their rules discriminately to benefit their interests with MLS and USL.

Basically saying that if two teams were on level playing field they would favour usl/mls sides in granting status.  It will come down to evidence that I have no idea about but the allegation that ussf has ties to two of the leagues (if true) could be damning if they have disproportionately applied their laws.

I read their case summary and their case was that USSF divisional provisions are solely used to favor MLS and hurt them and actually try to say they would be on the same level otherwise (they actually imply they are at the same sporting level in one section)

  18. 1 minute ago, harrycoyster said:

Basically, the entire case hinges on the NASL being able to prove that the division standards USSF has set for leagues are not merit-based and instead exist to prevent MLS competitors.

It hinges on divisional standards being solely to prop up MLS and hold down NASL. Essentially USSF says that the standards are based on financial force in the market(easily provable since being able to sell more tickets and having rich owners will give you financial power).

    And NASL declares war

I can see the holes in this and I'm not even a lawyer. For example saying that the USSF divisional criteria would bar teams in Europe from holding their current divisional status; um guys, european leagues have similar rules with things like stadium size and club wealth(look up Eibar). Also the numbers aren't completely arbitrary, they're based on what is needed to financially run a club at what the USSF deems division 1 standards(e.i what other teams in this category have)

Viewership is spread out over general things but sports is still sports. There's still only a handful of big channels. Young people (millenials) don't watch sports in general right now (unless it's esports) and those that do still prefer watching it on TV even to streaming. While 18-35 would go for a sports streaming service, the other demos (aka the bigger ones) are less game.

Also companies are spending more on advertising to older people than ever before

I'm not saying you're wrong about the last part but I'm more than willing to bet that's because that's who's watching tv and that overall spending is still towards younger people. Plus every year the amount of people who prefer or are okay with streaming gets bigger.
