coppercanuck reacted to m-g-williams in Cavalry FC launch/2019 off season thread
So . . . the nerd is me is actually more upset by the fact that they don't understand the actual hierarchy of the terms they're using. They should go with something more like Battalion, Company and Platoon (in descending order), or Corps, Division and Brigade if they really want.
They should also rename the Officer's Club the Mess, both because it's the proper term for what they're trying to allude to . . . and as it will probably be a better descriptor of the state of the place after a good game.

@Macksam is right about MLS. And it's MLS' fault for creating an environment where going through the motions is all that's required. Of course there are clubs that go above and beyond and maintain a high level throughout the season, but then you have "Don't worry if you finish dead last San Jose, no pressure at all. You wont be relegated and can try again next year. You will probably earn yourself the rights to the most talented NCAA player in the country, your players will have nothing to worry about in terms of dropping a level or being sold, and you will probably be rewarded with an even higher budget next year. Just make sure you show up and go through those motions so we can get these ticket sales in."
If you're at a temporary job and the manager walks in and says 19 of the 22 temps will be kept full time I guarantee you have people busting their ass, doing their best work to make sure they're 1 of those 19. If the manager walked in and said all 22 will be hired full time, I guaratee work rate doesn't improve, and you have people simply going through the motions because they have that security blanket. Similar to what we see in MLS and other North American leagues.
I praise MLS for giving Canada a platform to grow the game here, but I absolutely hate how they run their league like it's the NBA, or NHL where mediocre performances are rewarded and ticket sales come before sport.

Hammond from the open trials just tweeted this. I wonder if he's signed or invited to the training camp.
Fellow trialist Aaron Hooper also posted this.

coppercanuck got a reaction from nolando in CSL (any and all info/memories)
I watched on TV as much as I could. I was living in PEI at the time. When I got to University, I started watching live games at that level and quickly became a fan. Of course by the time I got to Toronto, the league was shut down and I was stuck watching the Toronto Lynx. I loved Vic Rauter's call of the games. Still echos. I miss Bunbury. I miss Pesch.

The Darkest Timeline: CPL follows USL's example of not publishing salary or cap information, leaving us to bicker about this for years to come

Next soccer related event at Wanderers Grounds is a university double header (womens then mens) between Dalhousie and Saint Mary's on September 7. Tickets go on sale for members on August 4 and the general public on August 7 - no idea what pricing will look like but 1 ticket will get access to both games. I really hope they don't overprice this event; would definitely be a bad look. Also, seems to be in line time wise with frosh week; hopefully that doesn't create issues. I don't think I'll be going to this one.

coppercanuck reacted to Ansem in CPL new teams speculation
Nothing's impossible with $$$. Doable yes.
Not ideal. The Als are the primary tenant and I doubt they'd like a CPL team messing up with their pitch. Also, the stadium's to big.
The Stadium at Universite de Montreal is very accessible and the size makes sense. The University wouldn't mind private funds upgrading the stadium either.

Good start. We'll take him.
Sure, not exactly Mo Johnston type name recognition but on the plus side he's NOT Mo Johnston.

That must be Carl Robinson, good signing HFX. Wow, impressive work, good for you (for taking him off of our hands).

coppercanuck reacted to lazlo_80 in Players you expect to see in the CPL
If you are so low quality you can be traded for like for like you shouldn't be in the league. The fact you think these players either will be or should be in the league is a little scary to me. This isn't a charity they're running.
Let me give you an example of how this player market works...
Right now there's 64 Canadian players who have seen time in USL alone.
assuming an 8 team league, in the USL alone you could potentially have 8 players come from that league and join the CPL. (8 x 8 = 64)
BUT if you made the Canadian requirement 8 per team, every Canadian player and their agent knows you need to sign them hence a SELLERS MARKET. They can raise the price demands of the player.
So instead the CanPL in an effort to reduce costs could make the Canadian requirement 4 per team. Suddenly agents and players know the CanPL doesn't need to sign them and can negotiate in a more even market, finding players that work from a talent level but also a budgetary level.
This is why the Canadian quota will be set to ensure the league and it's teams doesn't need to sign overpriced Canadian players...or even worse "like-for-like" players who shouldn't even be in the league in the first place.

MLS? UEFA Champions' League play-offs? UEFA Europa League play-offs? Why do you need to just reach soccer fans? Why not put an ad on during a Jays game? Why not put an ad on during a CFL game?

Just saw this. That's me.
I'm born and raised in Nova Scotia. I've lived in St. John's for a decade, but Halifax is my city.
I'll attend St. John's games if we get a team, however unless I personally have an equity stake in said team (haha), I suspect I'll always be rooting for Hali deep down. And even if I do grow to love an eventual St. John's team, I want access to early merch and new and possible ticket discounts when I travel home over the next few years.
Thinking of doing my Bachelor party next summer in NS with some buddies there, I expect I'll try to line it up with a game and spend a night or two at the Casino.
So yeah, I dunno, I'm happy to chuck $50 at CPL.

Yeah, just don't forget to bring your measuring tape to the stadium.

coppercanuck reacted to BenFisk'sBiggestFan in Players you expect to see in the CPL
I did some research because I was bored. I have a list of about 100 players who have some potential to play in the CPL. It ranges from USL to about the Scottish Prem. I have player ages, position, and last club and league. I also included my estimation of the player’s current salary (which probably isn’t all that accurate). As well, I gave a rating of the likelihood of the player accepting an offer from the CPL (again, personal opinion, and not entirely accurate).
I just did this for fun, and i figured some of you might enjoy it. Many of the players on the list will be to high of a level to accept an offer, other may be paid to highly, and i really don’t know the details of contracts for players. Some may be in the middle of a long-term contract and i have no idea. But, i think many of these players will end up being the guys in the league in the early years. If you know more about salaries or such, please feel free to edit the document.
Just PM me an email address, or if anyone knows how to upload a Excel doc onto the forum...

Ok well when you have your millions to invest in a proper stadium, good luck. Until then I'm going to be supportive and not crap on everything thing that I may not think is optimal.
