  1. The National is on this weekend at Spruce Meadows, and they are aggressively marketing Cavalry FC. I also chatted with Tommy Wheeldon for half an hour on Friday, and his plans on marketing the team during the upcoming World Cup are extensive.

If the new badge does not have a rabbit you need to riot.

Al Classico is about to get mental. Congrats to everyone in the YEG4CPL movement. I'm not going to bother with banter, you should enjoy your moment.
  4. So, maybe Herdman knows what he's doing...
  5. Membership update. Closing in on 500 memberships. Hoping we keep pace with Halifax as the weeks go on.
  6. We interrupt this whining about the logo to bring you Cavalry FC merchandise available online. I can say for a fact that the hoodie is damn comfortable, the scarf is hanging on my wall, and the backpack I thought was a shopping bag until my wife pointed it out to me.
  7. One of our supporters just signed up, and is #432.

Up to 251. So ~500 season tickets assuming most will buy 2, some will buy more than 2 and some less?
  9. @madmonte signed up an hour ago and he was member #168. Memberships just went on sale to the public this morning, so hopefully that number goes up this weekend.
  10. Checking in the morning after the event. I am absolutely ecstatic for this new club. People can whine and nitpick all they want about specific details, nothing can take away the excitement for me. Lots of media there; Global, CTV, CBC, Fan960 (Pinder hosted), Calgary Sun, and likely more. While I dislike the name, when they explained the reasoning behind the choice, it made more sense. The logo is filthy, and the stadium is going to be awesome. The stadium plans kind of remind me of a proper National League stadium, complete with raised corner stand ala the neutral stand at Craven Cottage. I chatted with the CEO of Spruce Meadows, and while things are still being worked out, I'm hoping the small stand in the SW corner (near the corner flag and judges tower) will be the supporters section. More importantly, I've already dropped $90 on my season ticket deposit and a hoodie.

Shawn's lucky I don't have any photo evidence of him at Friday's Foothills game. He wanted to watch the top level of soccer in Alberta. The best part about CPL supporter groups at this stage is that while there's a lot of banter, it's all good natured. Hell, one of the main supporters behind YEG4CPL stayed at my place after Al Classico. None of this Toronto / Montreal crap where people are ripping out seats or assaulting other fans (appreciating that is always the minority). Our kids can fight it out. We're all responsible for building this together.

Finally official. Tommy Wheeldon called me in early January to tell me this was happening, and us supporters were told during the Calgary Foothills / University of Calgary friendly in late January. Really looking forward to Thursday's press conference. Hoping to get a better picture of what the stadium looks like, as well as club name (please not Cavalry FC) and colours. Have a feeling my Visa will get a workout. To all the Calgary V's, I hope to see you in the stands.

Another article about the Calgary club, this time with the following quote: https://globalnews.ca/news/4193137/spruce-meadows-calgary-professional-soccer-team/?utm_medium=Twitter&utm_source=%40GlobalCalgary

Pros - Technically not on city limits so the owner doesn't have to work with the city of Calgary. The owner owns the land, and is willing to build a stadium without a public dime spent, at a time when the big game in the city is trying to milk taxpayers for hundreds of millions of dollars, so there's an opportunity for good publicity on that front. Despite the poor location, it's close location to the C-Train means a quick shuttle bus from the Somerset / Bridlewood stop (which the horse jumping events currently does). Has potential for great mountain views. Easy to get to from Okotoks, where the PDL team plays, hopefully drawing off the fan base the PDL side builds up. Cons - Cut off from the North half of the city by the city's main water supply and a provincial park. There is not a single North/South route on the West side of the city that can access the stadium. Using myself as an example, I live just North of the reservoir, and a 30 minute drive would be considered a good commute to Spruce Meadows. Often LRT lines are under construction during weekends which would make a long commute even worse. Being as Calgary is a very fickle (I would say terrible) sports town, this gives far too much ammunition for anyone on the fence to stay away.

Feels good to not have to hold that secret any longer. I'm not a fan of the location, but I've made peace with it.

Tommy Wheeldon has been involved from the start. He's not an owner, but he's the soccer brains behind the operation. Bringing professional soccer back to Calgary has been his idea for a long time, and I'm glad it's finally happening in public.
