cash might not be trading hands between the league, clubs and sponsors. for example westjet would likely be providing a discount but teams using them would still have to pay for services. nike and marcon are also big questions about whether they're paying the league or just providing goods.
given that we're 2 weeks from kick off and some teams are reporting low season ticket sales and no one knows what the story with onesoccer is, i'd say there's a good chance the league loses money this year (the league is still stable)

Agreed. as much as people think TV is dying, it helps scream "BIG DEAL" if one of the sports broadcasters is telling people it's a big deal.

The interesting thing regarding the DAZN pick up of the EPL is the amount the apparently paid for it (per The Athletic) - insider says $10-15 million a year for the next 3 years.  I've always had my suspicions on that rumoured "$150 million for 10 years" deal with MediaPro, and this DAZN deal sort of continues that.  I can't see the EPL and the CPL being valued in Canada equally.
For those with an Athletic subscription, you can find it here: https://theathletic.com/903037/2019/04/03/what-dazn-means-for-your-english-premier-league-viewing-today-and-maybe-your-hockey-tomorrow/

But that's not just for the US and Canada. That cost is spread out over several countries worldwide.
Regardless, NFL and Champions League are bigger drivers for subscriptions than boxing/MMA in Canada, and I'd be willing to bet EPL will be as well. So Meltzer's numbers are missing a huge chunk of the subscriber base.
EPL is just the latest in a growing line of big European soccer rights they've gobbled up. It doesn't really have too much to do with the NFL off-season "drought" but is another step toward being the main home of soccer in Canada.

The weather makes almost zero difference unless we are playing in the NWT and then it would affect our team as much as the opposition. During CCL the last 2 years TFC have won, lost and tied teams from Mexico and Panama during some absolutely horrible shit  weather.  Its not like the opposition rolled over and let us run up a 6-0 score line on them.  Every game was close.
Play the games where we can minimize the support for the opposition OR make enough money to start having some frickin friendlies.  If that is Toronto - great.  If that is BC - great.  If that is Commonwealth - great.  We are moving in the right direction and playing games period should be the goal of the program.  It's hard to qualify for the WC when your team has no cohesion because they have only ever played as a squad a couple of times.

i've worked similar projects in the past, the value of a deal will often include non-cash elements. i cannot speak to costs but i do know several things the cpl have quietly been working on for the last 2-3 years with regards to media and i know that his (and pb's) comments about production and the $200m total cited by places like the national post do not mesh with the league getting $150m cash over a decade.

You should watch how rugby uses their equivalent to VAR.  It's great.  And the officials are mic'ed up, so you hear them talking with the judge about what they saw, what they're looking for, etc.

    This is complete BS.
    1) The CSA tried to form in a league again in..the early 2000s?  With that CPSL (I forget the exact abbreviations).  Never got it off the ground at all.  There was so little progress from Canadian soccer that it took the fans actually going out to form a Cup competition for the teams playing in the USL/A-League.  There was zero progress on a domestic league in any form when MLS came along and had Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal join.
    2) The Canadian soccer team was sliding down the FIFA rankings LONG before MLS came to Canada.
    3) The CPL has played zero games so far.  The Canadian men's team is the best it's been in decades.  13 of the squad against French Guiana have either played or currently play for MLS teams.
If you want to say that Canadian soccer is going to be better for having the CPL, I'll 100% agree.  Again, it's going to give more players opportunities and more fans (either hard core or casual) exposure to the sport.  These are good things.  But to dismiss the good things that MLS has done for Canadian soccer (even if more could have been done) is gaslighting the issue.

And an extra 15-20k seats at BC Place vs BMO at $20 a piece will get you an extra $300-$400k over Toronto.  Because this game will sell out regardless of venue.
Again, I'm not arguing for one over the other.  I think we've all learned that both are solid choices now.

We don't know the terms of the MediaPro deal.  It's possible that it's a fixed rate, or that the increase in showing in Toronto vs Vancouver is negligible.  I honestly don't see the money from a one-off tv rights deal being relevant enough to determine which city should host this event.
To be clear, I'm not saying it shouldn't be hosted in Toronto.  I'm saying that the CSA should do what's in Canada's best interest.

Who the f*** cares what the USSF wants?  I don't care if they think it will make them more money.  That's irrelevant to the CSA.
Toronto/Vancouver for either match, and line up friendlies in nearby CPL cities.

It was dubbed the "CUSL", which stood for the Canadian United Soccer League. At one point it looked like the league was going to get off the ground while staying in conjunction with the then-called "A-League", so that it would effectively be it's own league/division but still played the American teams, but I believe that the Toronto Lynx owners ultimately were never sold on the concept and helped to squash it, which is one reason (of many) when few Lynx supporters who were supporting the club for the sake of its role in developing Canadian players were heartbroken when it was revealed a couple of years later that MLSE wanted to get a team in MLS, which effectively killed the Lynx as the top soccer ticket in town.
The CPSL, I believe, was the extremely short-lived Canadian developmental league in 1983 which lasted half a season (it was also a league that I never even heard about at the time, even though I was playing youth soccer at a high level and regularly attending Toronto Blizzard games).
My thoughts on this topic as a whole: I think it is a fair enough opinion that MLS in Canada hasn't developed as many players as we'd have hoped, and we were all pissed off that Canadian players used to be treated as internationals on US teams (for the most part this is no longer the case, and I think this is where we can actually thank the existence of the CPL because it allowed Vic to put leverage on the MLS to quit the BS south of the border - I don't think the timing of this change was a coincidence at all).
But I don't agree with the narrative that MLS in Canada has been bad for soccer in this country, that it hasn't been beneficial but instead detrimental, hasn't developed any players (or as many players) to a higher level than they otherwise would have done if all three teams had stayed in the A-league (now USL) or that if it wasn't for the Canadian teams getting into MLS, we would instead have a fully-fledged Canadian league of our own of MLS quality. I'm inclined to think that we'd be worse off than where we currently are without MLS, far far worse off - not just in terms of player development but also stadiums situation, the overall level of popularity of the game, media coverage and yes, investors in the CPL.
We all want the CPL to happen and to be a success and we all think it is needed, but it's not an either/or between the CPL or MLS where if you support one, you have to hate the other. In my view the venom being aimed at the Canadian MLS clubs (or in turn its fans) here should be reserved for V-Cup matches, rather than between Canadian soccer supporters who presumably all want the same end goal for Canadian soccer.

Interesting take from John Herdman about CanPL on the Sportsnet website:
    https://www.sportsnet.ca/soccer/herdman-gives-hope-cpl-players-aspiring-canadas-national-team/
...And while Herdman admits it will be difficult for young CPL players to make the direct jump into the national team, he makes the point that it’s not about where you start, but rather where you end up. The journey along the way can prove to be invaluable, too.
“What the CPL will provide is that springboard for young players to move to higher leagues, but it also might produce an absolute diamond in the rough. … For these young players in the CPL, from ages 17 to 23, we’re really interested in them, especially if they’re playing every week, and doing well and have an interesting profile,” Herdman said.
“The CPL is a huge positive, and I’m hoping to see after the first season if a couple of players can make the move overseas or to a higher level. You’d hope to see that, and I think that’s what this league can do, as well as push into our Olympic squad, our youth under-20 squad, and maybe push into our senior senor national team.”
He doesn't seem to see it as a rival or replacement to MLS as some posters do on here but as a springboard to it and the other "higher leagues" where CMNT players tend to play.

We're currently watching Canada's most talented squad in decades, and 13 of the players on the team against French Guiana either play for or got training from MLS teams.  That's not a coincidence.
There's a place for the CPL, as it provides both additional spots for Canadian players to develop and continues to expand the fan base for Canadian soccer fans.  But there's lots of fans in the big markets that follow MLS and won't bother to follow CPL, and if the MLS teams dropped down to CPL they just wouldn't follow them.

They could let us know how much the MediaPro deal is for, instead of just saying "trust us, it's HUGE".  Or having their lackeys say "it's jaw-dropping".
You're right.  It's a private venture and they don't have to tell us anything.  But not letting the fans know the basics is how the MLS operates, and considering how many here go out of their way to say "this league is better than MLS" (see: I don't follow the American League", I'd think they'd be a little more concerned about the CPL following in it's tracks.
You can be happy and excited for the league and still question them on things.  It doesn't have to be blind trust the way some people here sure are.
