Eric Lapointe group remains in the mix to own the Alouettes: report
    3Down Staff 3downnation April 15, 2019

Zurkowsky knows the Montreal market well and if he says there was a palpable buzz around the Lapointe group owning the Alouettes, the board of governors and commissioner Randy Ambrosie need to make it happen.

Lapointe played the last six seasons of his CFL career for the Alouettes and believes the franchise can thrive in La Belle Province.

“It’s a smaller business obviously than the Montreal Canadiens, it’s even a smaller business than what we have right now for most of the people that are in the group. Yes, there’s different aspects to it. There’s obviously football ops, there’s administration and then the coaching and the actual game, which is three different things,” Lapointe said on TSN radio in Montreal in March.

“I know exactly where to start. It’s an interesting business, but don’t get me wrong it’s not a passion investment for me: I believe there’s potential. I’ve seen numbers in the past and I’ve talked to many teams in the league also. It’s probably not a team that you could make 10 millions of profit every year… but as a group if we bring different type of people, different type of expertise, we can do great things for a small organization.”

Atlantic Schooners group unveils stadium design
    Drew Edwards 3downnation.ca March 30, 2019
It’s not an about-face but it’s certainly a significant shift.
The group trying to bring a CFL franchise to Halifax provided the first look at a possible stadium design on Saturday while also unveiling a dramatic change in their approach to securing government money as they try and get a facility built.
Anthony LeBlanc, a founding partner of Schooners Sports and Entertainment (SSE), says the group has shifted to a community-oriented model that would feature a permanent 12,000 seat facility that would be expandable for CFL games.
“We’re finally getting to the point to getting a building that makes sense but it ties into the vision that we’re talking about. The first thing they’ll say is that a community stadium doesn’t have to have the amount of seats that a CFL team may need and we agree,” LeBlanc said Saturday at an event in Halifax hosted by the CFL. “From a community perspective, what is needed is a fixed facility that will house roughly 12,000 permanent seats so this structure is what we’re talking to our friends and partners at the municipal, provincial and federal level.”
LeBlanc says his group at SSE would then be responsible for paying for the construction of an additional 10,000 seats, along with 4,000 temporary seats, for a total of 26,000.
“That brings the capacity of the stadium up to the level that would be acceptable for CFL events and that’s what we’re responsible for, Schooner Sports and Entertainment,” LeBlanc said.
SSE has entered into a partnership with Sport Nova Scotia, a non-profit organization whose membership is made up of over 50 provincial sport organizations. CEO Jamie Ferguson says his group is firmly behind the new vision, which could provide a facility that would be available to community groups 300 days a year.
“We are going to be able to program this facility for all of the days that the CFL team is not using it or there aren’t other large events. We are looking at upwards of 300 days a year that our provincial sport organizations are going to be able to use this facility a drastically reduced cost. That’s a big deal for us,” Ferguson said. “We think it’s a model that can be used for pro sports franchises and an amateur sports organizations all over the world that can help provide more opportunities for our kids to get the benefits of sports.”
LeBlanc says the group has signed an agreement with federally-owned Canada Lands to explore the development of the Shannon Park site, which had previously been identified as the preferred site for a stadium. A delay in reaching that agreement has slowed the progress of the project, including a planned update to the Halifax regional council.
“They still haven’t received that proposal because it took a lot longer then we anticipated to get to the point where we are now with Canada Lands,” LeBlanc said. “It will allow us to do that last piece of work HRM and the province have been waiting on to do the full analysis.”
LeBlanc says the change in approach came after Halifax mayor Mike Savage raised concerned about the scope and cost of the project and suggested a phased approach. While LeBlanc didn’t provide any numbers on Sunday, it has previously been reported the cost of the project has dropped from $190 million to approximately $130 million and that the SSE partners had about $60 million of their own money to commit to the project.
“We want to make sure that anything that is done that is involving any level of government is done in a wise, frugal manner and we have really listened to what we have heard,” LeBlanc said. “We have shifted and we’ve turn this conversation into what the community wants from a community stadium.”

^Good find.  Here is what the introduction to the video said, kinda summed up what we've been talking about.
Most Canadian fans remember the Gold Cup Semi-Final match between the US and Canada in 2007 when Canada was robbed of a last-minute equalizer by some diabolically bad officiating. But the two teams faced off in the Gold Cup Semi-Final 5 years before that as well, which went all the way to penalty kicks before the US prevailed. The most memorable part of that match was this sequence of events where the US had four point blank shots at the net in a manner of seconds, the first off the woodwork before Hirschfeld made two fantastic reaction saves with a Jason De Vos block in between. It was the moment that Lars arrived as one of Canada's premiere international keepers.

Alouettes sale imminent, perhaps Monday.  Possibly three groups interested, former player Eric Lapointe, now a well connected businessman, could be fronting a group.  Louis Lemay, Louis Morrissette, Stephen Bronfman have all been mentioned as showing interest, perhaps together.

^^So true about the politicians, especially if you are being heckled.  Pretend to see someone you know in the crowd and smile and point and wave.  Or eliminate the middleman altogether and wave to no one in this classic episode.

I think that is a real game changer in Canadian soccer.  For those of us who were around to see the damage that the "Ho" defection caused and be subjected to ridiculous posts that said it would be the best thing for Canadian soccer, it really is a ray of sunshine.  I will give full credit to him for helping turn that around and it couldn't have been an easy task.

Methinks you have your sarcasm radar turned off.
I spent 10 years in TV and in my early days we were amused by seeing how many ways a newspaper photographer could show a cheque presentation without the traditional holding the giant cheque between two people and shaking hands.
The arms folded was one of those stereotypes like only showing a pretty girl in the stands as a cutaway shot.  Cliche stuff that pros stayed away from.  But as was said I spose it's some sort of gangsta pretending cliche now and a stock shot to take but hopefully not overuse.
I still remember being thrown into news (from production) and not having a clue.  Thankfully a guy helped me out by telling me there were seven stock shots you could take at any news conference that would get you enough to decently piece together a story.

Despite this fellows penchant for the ridiculous, it should be noted that, in an interview, Liam Millar basically said on watching the USA, "they're no better than we are".  We shall see, hopefully both Millar and Philly Cream Cheese will be vindicated.
