Canada vs French Guiana Match Thread

My favourite memory from tonight’s match was while watching it with my 5 year old son and he turned to me and said “I want to be a Canada player!” We sang Oh Canada together. Celebrated the goals together. And dreamed of him suiting up for Canada together in the future. This is why playing matches and having them televised is important. *ironically all done while wearing the Northern Ireland top my wife put him in earlier today to wind me up. Haha so proud.

Regarding Osorio, let's not start with the attitude problem BS on here again. He's been a consistent starter for JH every game, for a year now, JH likes him and plays him bc Oso is a professional in every sense. Osorio plays hard every single time and wants to be a difference maker. Osorio is just extremely hard on himself because he wants to do well so badly. That's it. Read nothing more into his reaction to the sub. It happens in Toronto from time to time. No big deal.

I thought he was an absolute revelation today. Hardly put a foot in wrong, and he had a lot to deal with on his side, often in tight quarters. He was quite good going forward as well. Very impressive overall.

This is pretty cool: It is incredible that our NT has players who train or have trained often with the like of Ronaldo, Messi, Salah, etc. Maybe none of them will ever play for the first team, but regardless, this experience will stay with them forever.

Just getting back into town after a fantastic weekend in Vancouver. Going to the game live, and meeting many Voyageurs from BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan (in addition to reacquainting with others) really renewed my desire to support the national team in the stands. It's so great to see the great times everyone has with each other in person, in contrast to this site where it feels like negativity rules the world.

Similar experience with my six and nine-year-olds today in the stadium. To brush by Davies and Borjan, to watch a lot of fun and creative soccer on display, to celebrate NUMEROUS goals in their home city was just amazing. And then, at the very end in another moment of brilliance from Zach, he calls Atiba, the last man left on the pitch, to come and address the fans. He hopped the rail, and sat down with us, leading cheers with the megaphone, giving hi-fives to the kids, thanking people very genuinely...all with us (my boys and I and a couple hundred of our closest friends) crouched down like kids waiting to hear from Santa. I've had some pretty incredible experiences as a fan of soccer in this country, from legendary match days, training briefly as a coach under Tony Waiters, to having Carl Valentine as a guest in my own classroom, to having the Caps open their locker-room to allow my students to interview them....but this was something different, something to be treasured. Feeling pretty grateful for everything this weekend as a proud V. https://mobile.twitter.com/UncleDall/status/1109973289646972928

Most Canadians that say they dislike/hate soccer utilize diving as their number reason. However, that's not the real reason they dislike soccer, it's just a convenient excuse. Most dislike soccer because they just haven't properly witnessed the sport. That is all. Watching the sport at the highest, most exciting level such as a UEFA Champion's league knockout stage game generally converts even the most ardent soccer hater.

    Ottawa CPL Club

I meant to mention that I was at the Ottawa Fury SSH event on Monday and there was a Q&A period where the past year was brought up and JdG was pretty supportive of the CPL. Talking offline, I had a chance to voice my concerns to some of the staff. What they said was that it all came down to money. They paid an expansion fee to join the NASL, lost that when they joined the USL and paid another expansion fee. They estimate the current valuation of the club at around $7.1 million. From what I understood, it looks like the USL believes there are a number of locations in the US that want a club, but the USL Championship is eventually going to stop expanding and have new clubs join at the USL1 level. The Fury believe that if they did make the Jump to CPL and it failed, they would be not be allowed back to the USL because their spot would be snapped up and with no league to play, they would be forced to fold. This is something that supporters should consider - if CPL fails, there is no option for the remaining viable clubs to join an american league, so I'm praying that it is successful. They also mentioned that OSEG had spent $22 million on upgrades on the club up to this point and didn't want to lose the work they put into it. I can confirm, because when I went on a tour of the South Stand construction back in 2013, both the Fury and the RedBlacks had their own separate locker rooms and training areas being built. When I consider the failed trajectories of Canadian professional soccer leagues over the past 3 decades, I understand their reticence. They said that if forced, they would obviously have to join the CPL, but they hope to see it successful and join at the point that makes the most business sense to them and pay the franchise fee. Quite a few of the attendee conversations I overheard wanted to see the Fury in CPL sooner than later, because they felt more invested cheering against Canadian cities than American ones.

I and I think most others here would be disappointed if you stopped posting here. On the other hand we have had other family members of players post from time to time and as a family member one needs to be careful not to post too much information about things or to post opinions that could hurt the player. Some family members have been better about that than others. Also family members are usually very biased in their opinions which is understandable but again not always helpful to the player. As much as we love to have as much inside information and opinion as possible sometimes it is best not to post those things in public. I hope you will keep posting here and your posts are much appreciated but maybe it is better not to post in the heat of the moment and to think carefully about what you post beforehand to avoid posting information or opinions that should be kept private.

I think he’s more referencing the guy who barely gets touched in the lower body and then rolls around grabbing his face waiting for the penalty. Then miraculously with some spray he’s 100%. That kind of thing grated on a lot of people.

    Kamron Habibullah

It was more than just the goal he scored on Tuesday night. In the first half, the 'Caps team was absolutely dominated by a team of men who were no better than them in terms of skill. They were bullied and out thought by a much stronger, more experienced team. The only two who really came out of the first half with much credit were the GK, Evan Ince, who made a string of big saves, and Theo Bair, who's got some amazing physical tools - size, strength, and speed - that allowed him to match up against the older defenders. In the 2nd half, Nick Dasovic moved Patrick Metcalfe from the backline into midfield, as the #6, and brought Habibullah off the bench. Those two moves changed the whole game. The 'Caps just edged the second half in the run of play and got the goal to win the match. Habibullah was the youngest and smallest player on the pitch, by a long way, yet was not intimidated in the least. He was calm on the ball, played through tight spaces in the middle of the park, and wasn't shy about tracking back and putting in a tackle, when necessary. Like I said in the other thread, for a kid who's not blessed with out-of-this-world physical tools, like Phonz, he looks like he's got an enormously high ceiling. The other fans watching the game were amazed when I told them that he was only 15. I'm looking forward to seeing how he develops over the next few years.

    Herdman new head coach

So let's walk through this. Floro was terrible. We all know that. In the 2015 Gold Cup his team... Lost to Jamaica Tied Costa Rica Tied El Salvador Then under Zambrano, who we all know was amazing, in the 2017 Gold Cup his team... Lost to Jamaica Tied Costa Rica Tied Honduras And beat French Guiana 4-2 So clearly the difference between Floro (who is terrible) and Zambrano (who is a godsend) is that tying Honduras is better than tying El Salvador, plus he had that awesome 4-2 win against French Guiana. And of course, under John Herdman, who is the worst of all (because of emails that nobody has read and a slide from a presentation that nobody saw, and a prediction that we don't know if it's right or wrong yet, and don't even get me started on friendlies) Canada just beat French Guiana 4-1, so better than the Zambrano result. But he still doesn't have that Honduras tie yet. So he should probably be fired. Amirite?

Putting some games on mainstream TV is a good thing if this is indeed the case. Moreover, if they are going to have 20 games on the CBC on regular TV as opposed to the CBC streaming service then this is probably the best news so far when it comes to the CPL. Yes I know everybody is supposedly cutting the cord and streaming everything they keep telling us , but don’t fool yourself the majority of people are still watching TV the old fashion way for now . Therefore, if they do put 20 games on regular TV on CBC the exposure it will give the league will be immense. Let’s be honest the vast majority of sports fans in Canada still have no clue what the CPL is . Putting games on the CBC will make a lot of sports fans in Canada aware of the CPL.

    Mark-Anthony Kaye

Piette is a pure #6, you sit him in front of your backline. Kaye plays higher up the pitch. Different roles and qualities. I dont see the point in comparing both, really. You definitely need players like Piette breathing down forwards necks. And the kid knows how to use his body.

Like Law 12, the one that outlaws simulation and other unsportsmanlike conduct? Canadian culture, IMO, is built on a foundation of fair play. Faking injuries and diving are antithetical to that general consensus even if a significant minority admires those who cheat in this way.

    Scott Arfield

It's actually a good team, we have. I mean, Arfield would probably get into the USA squad with regularity. Several years in the Prem and now scoring 10 goals on the season at Rangers. Like, Timothy Weah is on loan there, at Celtic. It's only been since January, and he doesn't have half the goals Arfield has, and he's an out and out attacker. Meanwhile, David is a legit young talent. Scoring in Belgium regularly at the age of 19. That's a pretty big deal for any player, let alone one from Concacaf. I wouldn't call it an exaggeration to say he's a top 5 prospect in Concacaf, and he's our player. Then, Davies is a scale on top of that. Now that he's gone to Europa and actually played a little bit at Bayern, he's getting even more attention in the soccer world. And it's not an exaggeration to say he's a top 10 prospect in the world. He would walk into any team in our region. And Cavallini, you can't forget about his contributions in Mexico. A lot of people are taking notice now. Matt Doyle brought him up recently, giving him props for all the goals in Liga MX. That's a league the Americans respect. They would love to have a striker scoring regularly for them at that level right now. Hoilett is also a respectable player. Playing in the Premier League (once again) and even scoring 3 goals. Again, I don't think an American has done that this season, right? I honestly can't wait until we play the Americans. I think American fans are going to be taken by surprise. They will still largely ignore us until we put a good run together, but on paper this team should be very difficult for both the US and Mexico. Davies alone would be a challenge for both, let alone David and Hoilett also causing issues, Arfield making life difficult in the midfield, and Cavallini making himself a presence in the box. At the very least we should prove to be as annoying to them as Costa Rica for the next few years.

    CPL new teams speculation

Not wrong. Income in St. John's and income in the rest of the province is quite different. I disagree with the assertion that Newfoundlanders don't support their sports teams. IceCaps consistently had sellout crowds and were recognized by the AHL on several occasions for their consistent attendance. Edge games seemed to do well when I've been there. People drive in from Burin for Challenge Cup, to get a sense of their soccer support. Newfoundland has never had division 1 anything. I feel quite confident that if there was a D1 team in a D1 league, it would do well. Especially if it was soccer.

A team can never be about one player, and a coach can never put an individual's considerations over the teams. You of course understand that 100%. A coach has a lot of interests before him, the group dynamic, and things he has to prioritise--but hey, Liam probably learnt all that when he was 15. I am sure you know well enough that making statements like the above, which suggest Liam could have a similar frustration, is not benefitial to him. He has an agent, he speaks to the coaching staff and to Herdman, he has to deal with it all that way, never airing in public. I understand this is very hard, being personally frustrated. Plenty of other fans will express similar ideas to you, but we are free to. You are really not, at least should just take a breather and count to about 10 minutes before posting, just so it does not reflect on Liam and his professionalism. Sorry if this is a bit harsh, but we all want the best for him and are thrilled for him, so airing grievances should always be done in the 1 to 1 with Herdman and his assistants.

Got the start for Montreal tonight at RB, felt he played excellent. Putting these two clips(Defensive & Offense) from tonight. I'm old, don't know how to post the videos properly..... Nice highlight of ZBG shutting down Arriola(played in all 4 recent USMT friendlies), even got the friendly goal kick bounce. Timed the tackle nicely immediately when he realized Arriola slightly over touched his dribble. (scroll down thread) https://twitter.com/impactmontreal/status/1115775108323397633 Here was ZBG on a 40+ meter run down the flank. One of the best scoring chances of the game. Found this on Kicker. It says Elva signed a one year contract with a club option for 1 additional year. After his excellent performances in the last 5 games the club will exercise its option for next year.

JDG just confuses me at this point. I was beyond happy when he joined the Fury as a player, and thrilled to see him stay on in a management role. But his outright hostility toward the CPL is something I just can't wrap my head around, especially for Captain Canuck here who's the most-capped senior MNT player in Canadian history. You'd think he'd be the CPL's biggest cheerleader. And now he finally *is* starting to say positive things about the league after the all the vitriol he's been spouting for the last six months? I had a lot of respect for this man previously, and I still recognize that what he's done for the sport in this country is incredible. But nowadays, I just can't take him or anything he says seriously.

Does anyone know much about the Belgian league? He must have a good shot at winning the Belgian Young Player of the Season award. It's been won by players like Youri Tielemans, Leon Bailey and Vincent Kompany in past years. The end of the season will be a big test for him because the way the league is set up he will be playing fixtures against the top teams and competing for continental spots the rest of the season and in between that he'll have the Belgian Cup final on May 1. If he plays well through this set of matches it will say a lot about his level. He seems to really love playing for Canada saying in one of his interviews that coming on international breaks is like going on vacation because he gets to play with his best friends.
