Scott Arfield went 90. Had a goal and two assists. Wotherspoon also went 90. It was a 5-1 final for Rangers. Arfield is involved in everything, so many touches, opens up the field every time he receives the ball

These tryouts and the reporting on them is fantastic, I love these posts. We are becoming aware of an entire new pool, which is excellent. And the work in evaluation is being done by the CPL as a collective entity, also a very smart and encouraging sign.

    Calin Calaidjoglu

Lets not highjack the kids thread with the usual will he wont baloney. We now have good young prospects coming down the MLS pipeline (and elsewhere) fairly regularly. If he is good enough why wouldnt he play for us, we need to stop being worried about this all the time. We have a good young core of a team (minus the CBs), why wouldnt a kid who grew up here want to get in with Larin, Millar, Davies, David (Tabla?) et al?? Isnt Calin the kid that showed really well with U-17 etc at the USDA showcase tournie is the states over the summer?

The problem with not having playoffs in a CanPL context is that there is also going to be no relegation to keep things interesting at the bottom of the standings, so by about half way through a lot of games will start to become meaningless in competitive terms and that can impact negatively on the level of fan interest. People take this traditionalism over how soccer should be organized a bit too far sometimes, in my opinion. Always think mascots are a good example. Almost all pro level clubs in the UK have one now as clubs know that some of the under 10s that are there are captivated by it and it can be a bit of harmless fun for older fans as well: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-4068154/Mascots-behaving-badly-10-English-football-s-worst-offenders.html but it seems to be anathema to some of the fan group types in Canada as they see it as an attempt to Americanize the sport.

    CPL Season Schedule

The majority of soccer fans in Canada primarily follow leagues that don't have playoffs. Nobody in Canada who's interested in football is "pushed away" from the Premier League or La Liga because of a lack of playoffs.

No need for it, especially if there is a domestic cup, imo. Lots to play for. Traditional sports here don't have half the fun of a proper footy match, including all of the energy created by the supporters groups, which hockey and football can only dream of. Besides we shouldn't be in the business of trying to convert hockey and football fans; there are enough people in this country who properly understand the game to have stadiums full the country over as long as the product and the promotion of it is correct.

    Jonathan David

David made his first start today and played the full 90 as Gent was thrashed 4-0 at home to league leaders Club Bruge. No idea how he played but nice progress for someone playing amateur soccer in Ottawa less than 10 months ago.

    TFC 2018

Many of us thought for sure that TFC would do something last year to shore up the CB position prior to this season. If Bez had we might have be prepping for the playoffs. Aketxe was a huge bust and took away the option to get a first team CB. Knowing that we are back in the CCL the brain trust will really need to do some thinking about squad depth and having different pieces that can mesh together while still giving the stars a rest once in awhile.

Played 90 minutes as Gent went down 0-4 against the reigning Champs. In Finland D2, Hocine and Boakai are starting against HIFK. Having lost their last two games, this game between #3 (Ekenas) and #2 is pretty big. A win would put either club next to the #1 with 43 points. EDIT: Ekenas' bad run of form continues, as they go down 0-3. Boakai goes 90, Hocine 65 minutes.

No playoffs sounds more like a move to keep things simple. With 7 or 8 teams playoffs are going to be a rehash of the season anyways. Make this coming year a success, solidify next year with a few more teams and then start the dialogue about playoffs etc etc.

I know there were many excuses because of injuries and fixture congestion but Vanney has to take lots of blame for squad mismanagement, being to loyal to his nephew and Delgado are examples of this! Bez gets some blame here too, one of the highest budgets in MLS and he had a very unbalanced squad lacking quality depth in key positions such as CB!

    TFC 2018

I have not watched TFC in full a lot this year, but there was a lot of inept play out there today. Considering you are in the game until late, you have a lot to play for, there were constant give-aways and squandered attacking plays. I honestly did not think anyone looked particularly good out there. I suppose for TFC fans this is what it has been like most of the year, but I thought that performance was as listless as it gets. Now I think the playoff chances are pretty well zero.

    TFC 2018

Like usual, we're so screwed today if Mavinga and Moor aren't playing. Hernandez and nephew 100% out. Irwin's making too much to be a backup and like Bono, has been pretty bad this year. Ricketts to CPL, maybe Hamilton and Chapman will follow. I'd keep Hagglund as a backup but we really need some competent CBs. Delgado has been shit this year, I wouldn't care if he was a bench player next year but for the love of god, Vanney needs to stop starting him. Bono has been awful as well, I dunno if we should hope he bounces back next year or if we need to get a new starting goalie as well.

He injured his knee on the first goal as can be seen in the video below. He does not handle the throw well and also gets his foot stuck in the pitch which makes him unable to continue with the play and also injured his knee. He also is the player who keeps the attacker onside. On the other hand he was playing defensive midfielder, the defenders are totally out of position on this play and not trying to hard to recover either. Highlights below. He was subbed out before the second goal against. https://www.rbb-online.de/rbb24/archiv/20180921_2145/sport.html Here is an interview in German with him after the game. They talk mostly about his misfortune recently, missed an open net in previous game, misplays throw in leading to goal and injured on the same play as well as talking about the poor recent play of the team. Surprisingly they do not talk about how serious the injury is but from the tone of the interview and that he is talking to media after the game and not in the hospital it seems like it is not that serious.

Derek Gaudet is a name that should still be remembered by hardcore TFC fans: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derek_Gaudet Definitely jumped out of the page where that list was concerned for me. Think his presence shows that these tryouts are being used by players you could reasonably expect them to already be very much aware of and to have actively scouted while playing at an elite amateur level over the summer.

Kennedy played 90 at CB as Klagenfurt tied Vienna Neustadt 1-1. After a pretty terrible start to the season Klagenfurt has a win and draw in their last two games and are close to getting out of the relegation zone. Also while the win was against fellow relegation candidate Horn, Neustadt is a solid mid table team so hopefully they can continue their improved play and at least stay in the 2nd tier next year. Formerly known as FC Magna Vienna Neustadt, Vienna Neustadt (the Magna has been removed) was the most recent club of the infamous Austrian-Canadian billionaire auto parts/weapons dealer Frank Stronach. Stronach was previously the president of the Austrian Bundesliga while also simultaneously running Austria Vienna (yes that is a major conflict of interest) and was extremely controversial in both roles leaving both under heavy criticism. Things were not much different with Vienna Neustadt and he also resigned some years ago. The coach of the team said he would call him from Canada the day before the match and tell him what his starting lineup would be. The coach often did not agree with these decisions but Stronach told him: Er hat immer gesagt: 'Wer das Gold hat, macht die Regeln. Und ich habe das Gold.'" (He always said: Whoever has the gold makes the rules and I have the gold.) Also interesting to note that to my knowledge he has never invested a cent in Canadian soccer though considering the negative effects of his involvement in Austrian soccer, maybe that ended up being a good thing. It may not be the highest playing level but there are some interesting clubs in the Austrian 2nd tier.

Great to see him get another one. With the USVI squad announcement, I was just as excited to see Cav's name as the young guys we want committed to the program like David and co. Coming to a game against USVI - when we actually have other options for a change - should be taken as a strong signal of commitment. Thumbs up.
