    The Importance of Jr. Hoilett

Nice little article in "Inside Wales Sport": Junior Hoilett has been one of Cardiff City’s star performers again this season and Neil Warnock has revealed the story of how he came across the winger. The Canadian seems to thrive under his current boss and he only has positive things to say about the man who brought him to South Wales on a free transfer. ... He grabbed his ninth goal of the season on Saturday in the Bluebirds’ 4-1 win over Leeds United and he remains the top scorer for the season. Hoilett’s pace and trickery has caused all manner of problems for Championship defences this season and it’s that urge to beat people that Warnock likes. http://www.insidewalessport.co.uk/warnock-story-hoilett/

I wanted Cavallini to start that game, but I can understand why Larin was gifted the start. He competed for that spot and won it while Cavallini spent most of his time in Uruguay, away from the National team.

    CANADIAN HYPOCRICY

Why is this even a question? Without having read any other replies to this (sorry), I felt compelled to answer this, because I'm really tired of seeing this sort of thing from people who can't see the obvious difference. The Whore and De Guzman, etc. could have and would have made a huge difference to our national team had they decided to play for us. Not just the team that they would have played for at the time, but in the future as well by giving our national team a better image by most likely performing better, and thus encouraging more players to play for us and more Canadians to give our team a fair shot instead of supporting some foreign team where their grandparents or neighbour or whoever is from. Players who have been persuaded to play for Canada almost never leave some other team in the situation described above. If Joe Average hockey player can't make the Canadian team and goes to play for Germany, no one in Canada cares, because it's not going to make a difference to us, but he will help Germany.

I dont know what you want us to say. Hi, my name is Bison and I dabble in hypocrisy....is that good enough?? I cheer Arfield, Forrest, Bunbury, Borjan, Johnson, Davies etc that choose to play for us. I reserve my highest scorn for certain players that really broke my heart, or hurt the program, or played for our youth teams until they were able to go elsewhere. But I am a fan (ie fanatic), I have lots of strange beliefs about sports. I think I can help the team by cheering in my living room. I also Hate Conrad black and his baloney giving up his citizenship to join the house of lords etc. I still have a bone to pick with Steve Smith for that own goal as well. Its sports, its being a fan...it doesnt have to make sense.

We are planning, for the second leg of this series in Oakville to show up in force to welcome these two teams to The Voyageurs Cup for the first time. This marks an important and historic development in the competition. More details will be made available as we make arrangements and the venue and times are finalized. The game will be on June 13th.

He is back playing like he did when he was at Blackburn, especially his long range strikes. Something that is lacking with the CMNT. If he keeps this form, got to think he will be, if not already, on the radar of some EPL teams for next season.

"I'm proud to have played for Canada and just wish I had played a little bit more" He really should have seen the pitch more for us than he did. Our formation worked against him. One wonders what Humey might have done for us had he been given the responsibility and minutes of DeRosario for example.

    Victoria Highlanders 2018

Buy the tickets. I lived in Victoria last few years, and loved being at the matches. The team's game-day improved quite a bit last year over the previous, and that's on a very shoe-string budget. Sadly, I'm now at the other end of the country, so I'll have to settle for watching the online stream this year. I'm pretty optimistic about this new ownership group. Highlanders were doing a good job reaching back into the youth soccer community, and I feel like that's going to expand immensely in 2018. The new ownership group has some really good ties in Victoria, so I would expect to see them leverage those ties to promote the club, and what their academy can do for youth. It remains to be seen exactly what they'll do. I mean, they only took over a couple weeks back, give'm a chance to get a footing. With new logos, new kits, new coach and new players all starting to add to the new ownership, there's going to be a lot on their plate right off the draw. But please, buy tickets and support local soccer. Oh, and make sure you let me if/know when they have kits on sale. They're top of my list.

Which defector are you least pissed at?

That is the worst comparison ever made on these forums. Like seriously. One directly involves representing a country while the other does not. One is public the other is anonymous. Can we not make dumb comparisons like that? Not to attack but damn I just hate this "celebrities their just like us" crap Now I agree with you that she would not have been so high profile if she had picked Canada, much like Lewis, but that doesn't mean you have to like or even be fine seeing her in the Eaton Centre on a major store.

TFC possibly bidding too. Whitecaps have been linked for a few years so might just have his discovery rights. Money reported seems high for a 30 year old forward that doesn't score alot. Assist record is better but also not earth shattering. That said he more of a 2nd striker/wide forward. Would likely be an upgrade on Hurtado and Ibini but not convinced it' what we need. Creative number 10 and deep lying playmaker is more important imo.

A mechanic or programmer leaving the country for a job is analogous to a soccer player leaving to play for a club team. Now, if that programmer decided to rep. the US in the Computer Science WC i'd be pretty pissed about it. "God damn Brandon Poindexter, ungrateful fuck. You have your opinion true but you've also created an fictional situation where the CSA would move the tournament to the where you think it's best and in your fictional scenario basically threatening the MLS clubs if they disagree as dbailey has pointed out they might. Imaginary turf war might be the wrong term but I can't see the CSA making a major change like that unilaterally, consulting with all interested parties.

I'll take it one step further, one player can make a posostive difference and a NEGATIVE one... Growing up for me in 70's and 80's, cheering for Canadian soccer wasnt the negative, fatalistic enterprise it has become. The whitecaps and Blizzard in NASL, the 86 WC, close calls in 94 etc, it wasnt all doom and gloom. Hearing CBC stories about this phenom from Calgary I was excited, and then super dissapointed. But even then, the lucky coin toss/team of destiny in the 2000 GC put the wind back in my sails. But the whole time I was wondering what if OH had been on those squads? And dismal performances, painful player losses (ABeg and JDEG) beat me down as a fan, And by the time 2012 came around the little voice in my head knew we were going to blow it. But it all started with OH, he is the reason I think "CAP-TIE" any kid that shows promise. For alot of us OH made the difference in a bad way.

    Lucas Cavallini

Yeesh, I don't like that comparison. Cavallini is a lot better (in a relative sense) than Tancredi. I'm dubious of Herdman's ability but not anti-Herdman, and I thought his reliance on Tancredi was one of his poorer moves (notwithstanding her great ability at crocking opposition defenders).

Kamara really seems like the big presence in the box that Vancouver needed. Montero was good, but he wasn’t physical enough for the MLS. The caps thrive on balls into the box, and rely on the striker holding up the play a lot. He seems like our guy for that. If Kamara is able to control the box and Davies has a step up this year i think the Caps could be pretty good going forwards. If the midfield can get them the ball that is...

Few things... sorry for derailing this thread. To be clear, BBTB is not a troll, and I am not describing him below. I was expressing some frustration with Canadian Soccer 1.0. That is everything sucks, be relentlessly negative, tear down everything, remain pissed off about things that happened 30 years ago and find credibility in being angry. Throw the baby out with the bath water, and cut your nose off to spite your face. These are the founding principles of Canadian Soccer 1.0 We need more people to upgrade to Canadian Soccer 2.0. Get the fuck behind things and help them move. This doesn't mean you need to be a cheerleader and cant be critical. Being critical is essential. It means finding ways to contribute. It means help the stadium in your city get built, even if it's the wrong design, in the wrong location ect.... because it's better to have one than NOT have one. It's better to have a league than not have one.

"I think this will happen, but it's possible this other thing might happen" has nothing to do with consistency; it's about recognising that we don't have all the information, we can't predict the future, and it's wise to plan that things may not go according to plan.

USL isn't youth level, the average age of the league is 24. USL is where MLS teams want to cultivate MLS prospects in the 17-19 age range, but its proved hard for most teams to overcome the physical hurdle (even for teams that can field 11 players above USL level technically....which the Caps and Montreal couldn't do). Generally speaking there are two archetypes for USL teams: 1) MLS2 teams. Young, technical, smaller, development focused (keep the ball on the ground, midfield heavy formations, etc.). 2) "Could have played in the NFL teams". The wingers are fast, the strikers are tall, the defenders are linebackers, the midfielders close down quickly and go shoulder to shoulder at every opportunity. The owners tell their coaches to win at all costs because losing means the team folds. Outside of the best teams in category 1, category 2 wins almost every time. Winning is whatever though...it's the way the game is being played that's the problem. The games become developmentally useless when it's 11 USL level men against 11 teenage USL/MLS prospects. Look at Pierre De Silva on Orlando City B, a 19 year old 4* TDS prospect. He had 3 goals in 21 starts for Orlando City this year from LW/ST. Meh right? Actually he was tied for third in the league on chance conversion rate, but was fouled 57 times in the opponents half and suffered a broken nose and concussion. All that USL is doing for him is preparing him for a potential UFC career. The jump from the developmental, never lifted a weight, orange slices and juice USSDA to the physicality of the USL stunts development. The teams and league know this, which is why the second division is being established.

The whole snowflake argument about being cut from a youth team, and using that as an excuse a la Ho sickens me. Angelo Esposito (once touted as a number one draft pick) was cut three times from the highest profile youth team in the country. Unlike some, he had the nads to persevere and made it on his fourth try. He ended up scoring the gold medal winning goal on a line with John Tavares, Nuf ced.
