Davies needs to get the F out of Vancouver so he can get a real coach to teach him the game the right way.

Canada to face New Zealand in Men’s International Friendly in First Match for Men’s National Team Head Coach John Herdman Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team will face New Zealand on 24 March during the upcoming FIFA international window. The two sides will meet in Murcia, Spain for the Saturday afternoon match at Pinatar Arena. This fixture will be the first official match with John Herdman at the helm of the Men’s National Team since he was announced as Head Coach and Program Director on 8 January 2018. https://www.canadasoccer.com/canada-to-face-new-zealand-in-men-s-international-friendly-in-first-match-for-men-s-national-team-head-coach-john-herdman-p161368-preview-1

    Sack the CSA

Anyone who doesn't see getting rid of the CSA in it's current form is suffering from Stockholm syndrome. Under no possible measurement has this been successful. It hasn't worked. I too thought real change was upon us when I listened to Montagliani speak to the media about the future of Canadian soccer. It's about time that Canada Soccer is taken to task over decades of incompetence. As a former player and coach in Canada I have been hearing the buzz words "development" and "grassroots"etc. since the 80's. They write studies and throw blame around to unqualified coaches and untalented players. Never once has anyone truly looked at how the executive does their business and why they are such a colossal failure at it. For that matter, has there ever been any real studies on how other countries with similar budgets become successful at making competent decisions from the top? I'm actually kind of surprised that I care so much about this. I haven't lived in Canada for twenty years. When I saw the hire of Herdman I thought it was some kind of joke. Then I watched from afar as tidbits of information came out. Then it abruptly stopped. The CSA didn't hold a news conference to introduce their new coaches and didn't give any interviews. They clammed up completely and are using the "It will blow over" tactic. When something in a governement appears to just be pushed through without any oversight or transparency the reasons behind such a move are almost always money and power. That's a hard thing to explain to us minions at a press conference. We're not "qualified" and we wouldn't understand. There is one former player that I have watched in this situation to see how they reacted. Craig Forests tweet after it occurred speaks volumes and was almost the exact reaction I had. I later watched an interview where he talked about the lack of transparency and that it appeared to be the same thing that's been going on his whole lifetime in Canadian Soccer. The look of frustration on his face was evident. It's really hard to care about a sport in your country when it appears the organization in charge has little interest in putting their best foot forward for their current and former players. Let's make this clear. Alphonso Davies is not a product of the great CSA development team. Along with incredible natural ability and maturity he is a poster boy for what happens when there are professional clubs in your country scouting for young, available, cheap talent. If the CPL has any modicum of success you will see similar stories in the future. I, for one, do not want this CSA taking credit for some amazing development plan when it comes down to the natural occurrence when you have business' acting in their own self interest to develop talent for their teams in order to turn a profit. I fear that the time for making real change in the CSA is running out because the Pro teams will initially gloss over their failures. Much as we saw south of the border. Not only am I for a complete overhaul of the CSA, I'm surprised it took so long to become a topic on these boards since this whole mess started three weeks ago. I'd also like to add how much I enjoy this site and how it allows me to keep in touch with the game in Canada. It was a big part of my childhood. Take care.

I think Tabla's ceiling is higher than Davies unfortunately. It's not fair to say Davies has done more when Tabla has actually scored goals in the league.. I think Tabla could develop a ton at Barca, he has elite skill.. one of the best technical players for his age in Canada/US without a doubt. Davies is just a natural freak of an athlete, he is confident, decently skilled and incredibly fast but I think he needs to get out of Vancouver sooner than later if he's to reach his potential.

I've got the audio from today's (February 1st 11:00am) Q & A between Dr Nick Bontis and CPL commissioner David Clanachan held at McMaster University. http://www.rocketrobinsoccerintoronto.com/CPLF0118.htm number of teams, meetings with supporter groups, MLS operations, broadcasting possibilities, players, the league ten years from now, relegation and promotion (including how could you relegate an owner who's invested millions?) , equitable (ie women's league in future), how to attract foreign players, advice for sports exec wannabe's (this was mostly a student address). Canadian content AND young player rules etc. I'll post some pictures and some more comments tomorrow.

    CPL new teams speculation

http://www.highlandersfc.ca/news/highlanders-fc-announce-new-ownership-group I would say this puts the Highlanders back on the radar. Based on the new owners profile, I wouldn't say deep deep pockets but definitely bringing some bucks to the table. Interesting snippet at the bottom of the article.

Actually, I like him where he is. The 3 Canadian teams are reliant on Canadians due to economics and the domestic rule. Having a Canadian Coach on an American team gets more Canadians into the MLS. Hopefully it translates to the success he's had in the NASL.

Of course. Results mean nothing. As you can see though, I am not gushing about the result, but I am gushing about the performance. It was assuring to see everything was clicking with the first unit, especially with Colorado around the corner. They have added many pieces and have improved, but I expect them to lack chemistry, unlike us.

    Canadian Nationalization Countdown

To be clear, in order to be eligible for citizenship, one must: - have lived in Canada for 1095 days within the 5 years up to the application date - have previously applied for Permanent Resident status (relatively easy to obtain once you are living and working in Canada) - finally, pass the citizenship test - also of note, the usual wait time for a citizenship application is 1 year (assuming CSA does not grease any wheels) Players that are eligible for citizenship in time for WCQ 2022 Impact: Ignacio Piatti: no youth caps, can apply for citizenship next year, could have a passport in hand by August 2020 (will be 35 years old in 2020) Evan Bush: no youth caps, can apply for citizenship anytime (will be 34 in 2020) Daniel Lovitz: no youth caps, can apply for citizenship next year, could have a passport in hand by August 2020 (will be 28 in 2020) Whitecaps: Cristian Techera: no youth caps, can apply in April 2020, could have a passport in hand by April 2021 (will be 29 in 2021) TFC: Nick Hagglund: no youth caps, can apply for citizenship next year, could have a passport in hand by April 2020 (will be 27 in 2020)

So there seems to finally be movement on the part of the Highlanders. Rumors of possible new owners abound and they recently posted this to Facebook: "We're on the cusp of some exciting news. Looking forward to sharing it all this week - including the release of the PDL schedule. Stay tuned for more information!"

    Sack the CSA

This thread is for the sole purpose of shit ting on the CSA for the crap ass job they've been doing for the past 25-30 years. Mont Vic seems to be the only competent person to run that org. for god knows how long and the second he's gone it's back to the Brit old boys cronyism. Now we've fired a reasonably competent coach who was never afforded a chance to prove himself for a guy who has never coached a Men's professional club and whose CV includes a few seasons in the Sunderland academy and the New Zealand and Canadian women's team. The CSA reforms were supposed to lead to a more professionally run organization with members appointed for their expertise and free of the contradictory influence of the provinces. Now it looks like we have the most amateur leadership we've had in decades. It's time to Sack the CSA. It's time to SACK STEVEN REED!

“Hopefully with CPL coming in there's higher motivation for clubs to try to differentiate and get to a higher level, if it becomes clear that doing so earns relationships with local pro clubs” (from @Complete Homer, quoting not working on my iPad right now”) Plus if the CPL teams would be willing to put a team in their local league like TFC then that is less teams needed to find. And another important initiative I think is the expanded Voyageurs Cup. Let’s support the hell out of the games involving D3 teams to show it can be a revenue generator!

Well... for the most part they do the endlessly boring necessary stuff that is required to run a large national organization and would probably be worse than solitary confinement for most people here. And if you ever get an offer to do it, I would be weary, it's probably a trap. You'll arrive and there will be plastic on the floor.

Players want to play at a higher level where they can earn more money. There are at least three more MLS franchises coming over the horizon soon after LAFC with around 60 roster positions that will provide salaries beyond what a low budget start up pro league in Canada would have to offer. At least some of those new jobs in MLS will go to Canadians. The expansion process is likely to continue until they reach 32 or so and will almost inevitably hoover up more CMNT players in the years ahead. CanPL, if it ever actually does launch, will be another much needed stepping stone to bigger and better things for Canadian players rather than the desired destination for players that are likely to make a serious impact for the CMNT in World Cup qualifiers or Gold cup tornaments, unless a much more serious level of investment starts to materialize than the one that has been talked about in podcasts and interviews by Paul Beirne and Brian Clanachan over the last year or so.

I’m not convinced. CPL teams certainly aren’t going to spending material coin on buying fringe CMNT players or frankly any players. I believe this is the result of having a Canadian in the management ranks. Marc did the same thing with San Francisco. Well done MDS!

Yes. Petrasso, Henry, Liam Fraser, Kaye, Jakovic - when is the last time MLS picked up this many Canadians in one off season? We are feeling the effects of CanPL already. There is already a more competitive market place for Canadian players. Its a win - win for Canadian soccer.

I’m loving this thread, but honestly there should be realistic ways of sacking thr CSA. I think the Federal and provincial bodies need re-organization. Its been broken for the past 30 years almost as we’ve been regressing since we last made the World Cup. I’m curious to hear some ways of trying to better ourselves. I’m also curious to hear what Zambrano’s “Manifesto” if you call it entailed?? Thought some whispers stated that the thought we need to refix the provincial and some federal bodies to improve here. Hope Zambrano releases his ideas of what he had planned.
