TFC 2018-2019 Off-season

I wouldn’t mind Edgar as a 5th CB.

With Auro back and the adding Deleon I think its pretty safe to say VDW will be playing CB.

We just need to sign a winger/forward at this point.

4-4-2

Bono

Auro-VDW-Mavinga-Morrow

Deleon-Vasquez-Bradley-Osorio

Gio-Alti

3-5-2

VDW-Moor-Mavinga

Auro/Deleon-Vasquez-Bradley-Osorio-Morrow

Gio-Alti

4-3-3

Bono

VDW-Moor-Mavinga-Morrow

Vasquez-Bradley-Osorio

Gio-Alti-Jansen? Or FA

Lots of different looks/lineups we could use.

Auro loan deal made permanent.

Well there goes my theory as to why they picked up De Leon. My guess is VDW never sees the light of day at right back and is permanently moved into the middle of defense.

I don't think Vanney will hesitate to play VDW at RB if the occasion calls for it, but making Auro permanent is huge. It really allows him to keep VDW at CB.

I do think they'll be times where he'll find himself out there, but I do agree that with DeLeon, it'll be seldom.

I think DeLeon was essentially an insurance pick up. He can play high as a winger, or he can play as a wingback, or he can play as a full back. Since Auro and Jansen weren't guaranteed to come back, having DeLeon allowed TFC to add depth to that side of the field regardless of how the negotiations played out.

Now that Auro is permanently a TFC player, I am really hoping Jansen gets done.

If they succeed, I think it'll be a good off season despite no new CB. A good CB pick up would turn it from good to great however.

While the starting 11 is fine the issue still remains that our depth is not able to withstand the rigours of a full MLS schedule and a lengthy CCL run.  The young men from TFC2 are not ready for prime time from what I have seen.  We lose a cb or striker and we are in for another mediocre season.  I know they will better understand how to work through it all which is a positive, and that will help to some degree, but the roster as it stands doesn’t appear to be able to handle injuries any better than last years.

Not bad, but your missing Delgado and Zaveletta, at least 1 of them need to be in the starting 11 every game.

LOL I actually don’t mind Delgado he just had a rough start of the year.

Our depth will be better for sure.

I hope we bring back Hamilton on a cheaper deal.

Two rumours for centre backs have emerged today.

One is for Michael Parkhurst, who is also drawing interest from Chicago and NYCFC. The 34 year old had his option declined by Atlanta and contract negotiations have stalled.

The other is for 30 year old US international Omar Gonzalez. His time in Liga MX seems to be coming to a close with Atlas.

Of the two, I think Parkhurst is more the type of CB Toronto needs (to replace/supplement Drew Moor), but Gonzalez (unlike Parkhurst) is in his prime, so perhaps he'd be the better buy.

He'd be more expensive as well, so it'll remain to be seen if TFC moves for either player. They're just rumours after all.

Who do you guys think would be the better fit?

A cb and aerial ball specialist would be more interesting..their cb's are all 6'0 or 6'1..Gonzalez is 6'5 and wins a lot of aerial balls and will score a few also..Parkhurst is the type who can play anywhere at the back..played more at rb lb than cb in europe..they have enough of that with mavinga van der wiel moor..so definitely Gonzalez but Parkhurst would be a very good signing also

What about Tim Ream? 31 year old CB from Fulham. He has only started 7 games for them this year and they are desperate to make moves come Jan if they want to avoid relegation.

Have thought of him.

Of course he'd improve the backline, but Fulham's defence has been a shambles and while that's not entirely on him, it does give me reason to pause, or at least look more favorably at a move for Gonzalez, Cameron or even Parkhurst instead, despite all playing at a lower level than Ream is.

Additionally, he's a left footed centre back so he'd theoretically be competing with Mavinga in a 3 man backline, which may be a pro or a con depending on how you look at it. He can play left back too (as can Mavinga) so that doesn't hurt I guess.

Another thing with him is that I don't see him as being ideal for the Moor role, if TFC continue to play in that way, that is.

That being said, his quality is such that should we get him, Vanney may just rethink the 3 man backline concept all together. In other words, stick to 4 at the back:

Morrow----Mavinga----Vdw----Auro

Morrow---Ream---Moor----VDW

Ream----Mavinga---Moor---VDW/Auro

Another name that makes sense is Giancarlo González, CB from Costa Rica.

I wouldn’t worry about Fulham struggles turning off TFC from signing a guy. Obviously the quality of the EPL is probably the best league in the world while MLS is far from it.

TFC is being linked to signing Lukas spendlehofer an Austrian CB. If we add him then the guy on the allocation list has to be a winger/forward.

Looks to be an interesting player. Born in 1993. Won the Austrian Cup last season with SK Sturm Graz. Was on the books at Inter but looks to only have made a single Serie A appearance. Has a large amount of youth caps, but no senior cap for Austria yet.

The fact that we have brought back Auro but not Jansen and are being linked to this Lukas guy is leading me to believe that the guy on the allocation list is not a defender and is a forward/winger.

So, I was going through the list of cases that the Court of Arbitration for Sport will be hearing over the next few months in light of the Fury challenging CONCACAF's motion to boot them from the USL. While going through the list I found that on January 10, one of the cases is "Fenerbahce Futbol AS v. Gregory van der Wiel". Does anyone know what this is about?

Perhaps they owe him money.

2018. Oh what could have been! Hate to rip open old wounds so i have been hesitant to post anything about the Club world cup that has been playing out over the past week.  Chivas has posted terrible results and proved what some observers and pundits of the soccer scene in Mexico said about their winning of the CCL. They are just poor and a poor representative for the region.  They lost to a tunisian side the fifth place match.   From my recollections of past club world cups, mexican clubs have been pretty consistent semi finalist and often third place finishers.

Not to sound like a blatant homer, but i have hard time believing that TFC wouldnt have done better.  I know they had a tough season but still dont think its far fetched that they could have and should have been playing RMadrid in the semis.  That 90th minute Delgado punt over the crossbar in the final of CCL will be hard to forget.  As will that chance that Vasquez had earlier.

I was mad we didn’t win the the CCL but for some reason I dont care about the fifa club World Cup at all. I see barely any coverage for it and it probably wouldn’t have been fun to see TFC get destroyed by Real Madrid if they even got to the semis.

Have always rated him but if he’s making his runs and risky plays in a 3 man back line that could be trouble.

Don't like this move.  I have watched him closely on a few occasions.  I always believed he was over rated

He is overrated because he makes some sexy spectacular plays but he is still a good player and good ball moving defender. But for him to work well you really need to have a very good stay behind defensive CB behind him. He doesn`t seem well suited to a 3 man back line. Also at 33 and 34 in August, one would worry that he might be slowing down because his speed is very important to him being effective. He was pretty popular in Montreal so it would hurt to see him in a TFC jersey and would pretty much ruin his legacy here. He has some good leadership characteristics but also a tendency to yell at others even when he is the one who screwed up.
