I believe Reza was in attendance at the Canada vs China game at the WWC in Edmonton in 2015. He was pointed out to me. I’d intended to go say hi and thank him but never got the chance.

It must have been pretty cool at least to be able to stand back and watch something still going that he was so instrumental in creating almost 20 years before.

Yes he was, with his little girls. I went to say hello as we hadn't seen each other in years. As I posted before, Reza and I wrote up the first Voyageurs Christmas cards to Cdns abroad back in 99 or so.

Really something we should bring back.

Should we do it this year?

Not a bad idea but times have changed. You can 'friend' players on FB, follow them on Instagram or tweet them these days. The fan/player experience has totally changed. Being far away from home isn't what it used to be said the old codger.

True.  But there is something nice about a card, or it could be something else.

I forgot all about the cards.  Hell, I'd throw in some money to fund this excellent endeavour if we wanted to start this up again.

Things aren't the way they used to be, true enough but how often do you get anything in the post anymore?  Anything that matters?  Does stand out when you receive it though doesn't it?

Could be great fun.  Designing cards and making lists and what not.  A Vs community event for those who are interested.

Good Lord, don't I sound nostalgic.

Being an official non-profit is something that I have wanted for some time, and proud and delighted that this has happened.  Many congratulations to socceronly, and any other members who have been a part of this.

You know, I've been around this board for some time, many highs lows.  I'm not familiar with official structuring of a Board, but I'd be disappointed to see influential members of the Voyageurs who have been long term leaders and have carried this organization be excluded from our leadership.  Socceronly is the clear example in this case, but there have been so many others over the years.  Whatever is to come next, we need those people to continue to lead.

Very well done, and Congratulations!

Do we have a Board of Directors and who are they?  I assume a list of initial directors was named in the application for incorporation.  Do we also have a set of Bylaws?

I am currently the only director.

We do have a set of bylaws, I want to sit down with Martin first and make sure what I am posting are the correct documents.

I met with Aubrey, and I'll have all the inventory tallied when I go back to Vancouver in December.  Inventory is in two (actually three) places right now.  When that is done Aubrey will have a set of basic financials up to get things started. Bank account is set up with BMO.

I am just finishing a course right now, and my final project is due on Dec 5th.  Back on the horse then.

Currently having conversations with people about what we should actually do/can do, how we should impliment membership and waiting on meeting with some people from Canada Soccer also.

And prior to this, Mehrdad Mousadi (spelling) created Stadium North, on the CSA site.  Mehrdad was a great guy.  He too was from Iran.  Used to make (on his own) CSL newspapers and sell them at the CSL games in Ottawa.  The CSA saw him at an Intrepid match and hired him for CSA Communications.

He eventually created Stadium North, which had a forum.  This would be around 95.  The Stadium North forum is where the V's seed was planted.  I think that is where we voted on the name, Voyageurs.  Stadium North was a great idea, very well intentioned and way ahead of it's time, but the CSA didn't like the criticism they were taking on their site, so the plug was pulled. From there, we quickly created our own site and the V's were born.

He left the CSA for World Soccer (?), in London in mid to late 90's.

Mehrdad was a great guy.  Very passionate about Canadian soccer and way ahead of his time.  He should be in the soccer Hall of Fame.  His work left a real imprint on Canadian soccer...

Found an old copy of his fanzine buried deep in a storage locker:

Will post when I can figure out how to format it sensibly.

I would love to do a printed annual.    Images, quotes and just plain old random V's stuff.

Glue it together on the kitchen table with gluestick and scan it back in to have it printed on the worst newsprint possible.

It was an inauspicious debut for my friend Mehrdad who had previously run a soccer league inside a POW camp in Iran for the Iraqi prisoners captured during the Iran/Iraq war. His love of the game has taken him into a very solid career in soccer broadcast journalism.

Go for it Jamie but try not to eat the glue sticks! ;)

The New Year's got me wondering about new beginnings and wondering if there's any update on an expanded platform and leadership, BoD, etc.

What do you mean by expanded platform?

Membership will be available by the end of the month.

What would you want a BoD to do, or rather what would you want the V's to do that would require a BoD?

Anybody remember Elaine Sun, who did such good work promoting the women's team and running the website gobigred.ca.  I was cybercruising the other day and saw she is now a Team Leader with Canada Basketball, well deserved.

She did amazing work w her site! Happy for her and not surprised

Sorry thought that had been mentioned as something that was happening.

But in general, anything. Right now it's all one person. That's not a good best practice. The more the merrier.

Yes, I agree. A lot depends on the results of a meeting that ended up not happening (yet). Will likely happen in Vancouver at the NL game.

We don't really hold the keys to the castle.  If the door is open for us, we will do a lot more and will need a lot more people.  If not, and we continue as is.... I don't see the need for the bureaucracy other than abstracting it from me and providing financial transparency.

Perhaps I am misunderstanding the background and if that's the case apologies in advance. I just noticed recent things like these:

  • POTY Aware Ideas
  • Human Required: Voyageurs Cup Section Manager
  • Human required: Awards Manager
  • Voyageurs Coins - Membership Item
  • Event suggestions for Voyageurs attendance
  • Booth Ideas & Working Trade Shows

That is a pretty wide and far-reaching scope and set of actions and the kind of thing I would be really comfortable with being decided on and looked after by a management group of people. I see it more as efficiency and good organizational design than bureaucracy. Like I said I know you work your ass literally off, and you will go to heaven as a saint. That said I am aware of the limitations in everything being done by one person and would like to see things have more structure and hands. Maybe I am the dissenting voice though, just IMHO.

Getting people to help isn't the same as handing them the keys.

I am being very cautious with that as many people have messaged me and some of them are bat shit fucking crazy.  Demanding this, demanding that.  They already feel that given this is now a non profit and that they like soccer and post on the forum that they have a right to a seat at the table and to take things in directions that would simply lead to our destruction.  We are not going to start a league one team, demand the CSA resign, start raising money to build professional academies.....ect....

Yes friend, be double cautious.  Power changes people.

Start a goon squad to intimidate dual nationals into playing for Canada.
