Janine Beckie Signs with Manchester City

I know this is being discussed in the old Janine Beckie thread but I think this deserves its own topic.  That's pretty bloody awesome for her, moving from the dumpster fire that is Sky Blue to one of the best football organisations in the world!  Now I have to buy a Man City Jersey, and that kinda hurts...

The NWSL website has a short article with a letter from Beckie explaining her decision.  She says it was about the opportunity to play in Europe, and that she has no beef with Sky Blue.  I think it was a letter that had to be written, since her move was adding gasoline to the fire around her old team.

I've noticed that Beckie shies away from the physical side of the game, avoiding heavy contact and collisions in play.  That can be a problem within the US style of play, and maybe she was falling out of favour with coaches over that.  Perhaps she will be much better suited to the European style, which doesn't emphasize physical play as much.

According to twitter, Beckie scored in her first appearance at Man City.  That had to feel good, considering that she didn't score at all for Sky Blue.  I hope that's the first of many for her.

When you look at the highlight video  of the match, it does look  like Janine Beckie scored the second goal for Manchester  City women  ( 3.28 minute ) and it was announced  to the Academy Stadium as a Janine Beckie goal .  But officially, the second goal is listed as an  own goal for a Leicester City woman player.

Nice video, I can only imagine how Beckie feels going from a one shower trailer and cow pasture in New Jersey to playing in the academy stadium and using the same training facilities as a Premier League side.  Wow!

It's a shame the FA import rules don't allow more Canadian women to follow the same path.

Thanks to our simplistic approach to the management of the women's game, the UK are literally leaving us in the dust. They have at least six divisions in England alone better than anything we have.

And speaking of MCFC, quite impressive to see Steph Houghton in the spot with Bale, Lingard and Alli.

That's a great commercial. Thanks for sharing!

Correction. This past Wednesday. There was another thread that mentioned her 4 goal game earlier in the week, so I was surprised to read your post thinking it happened twice in one week!

You are right, apologies. Didn't see the other thread. Hopefully she carries this confidence into France next summer.

It was a cup game against a Tier2 opponent while the team rested their better attackers. Beckie got her first start of the year and hugely made the best of it and was player of the game.

With the attackers MC has the difficult part is getting playing time and just dressing on game day.  Tough for anyone to find minutes attacking with Nadia Nadim, Tessa Wullaert, Jill Scott, Nikita Parris, Caroline Weir, and now Pauline Bremer returning after a broken leg a year ago. And then you have to fight other young players like Georgia Stamway who at 19 just got a couple England senior caps (and lost the golden boot on assists in the U20 this summer).

She has thin minutes with Man City but it's a much better place to be for a young player with ambition. Gutsy move to put yourself in that position.
