Ottawa CPL Club

So your expectation is for CPL to stay out of Ottawa until "one day" the Fury come around?

Stay in the USL to determine if the CPL will actually survive. The Ottawa Fury are not a charity; they are a business. Why would they as a viable business that is valued at a certain level take a chance on a league that hasn’t even started?  From a business perspective that would be foolish. And this isn’t communist China; attempting to strong arm a business isn’t the best way to build a relationship.

Yes it does look like that. Makes you wonder why we had to go down this road in the first place.

Now there will be all sorts of speculation about what deals have been made with regards to 2020, but I don't think we will hear anything until next Fall (if ever). On its face Concacaf looks very weak.

We had to go down this road because the exemption was going to be removed for 2020. This little drama made news and made it clear to everyone concerned that an exemption for 2020 and beyond is not happening. If they had quietly approved for 2019 the situation would simply have carried on.

Weak? LOL It makes CONCACAF look like they are magnanimous AND enforcing the rules.

If you believe Goudie on TSN radio, OSEG had absolutely no discussions with Concacaf this week, haven't spoken to the CPL in 6 months, and only heard about their sanctioning from CSA without any reasons attached.

No reason to disbelieve him on any of that. The 6 month thing appears to imply that an 8 team launch was still being peddled by David Clanachan and co after contact with the Fury had ceased probably based on the assumption that USL sanctioning would be impossible in 2019.

So are all the people saying Ottawa is a viable club just going to pretend like your coach wasn't begging fans to come to games in the press last summer. The Fury are being put on a pedestal simply because they exist. That's a damn low bar. By all accounts it's looking like they would be below average in terms of CPL fan support and "the CPL hasn't even kicked a ball yet".

Does the timing suck? Yes, for both the Fury and CPL who would have to adjust for an 8th team again. This notion that the Fury are better than the CPL is just nonsense.

That's very generous. But you don't put out a statement like they did last week and then do a 180 days later without providing an explanation.  Victor could easily give a media interview to make himself perfectly clear about 2020.

I would really like to read whatever correspondence Concacaf sent to the CSA about the Fury in November.  Maybe their warnings and timelines have already been communicated in writing.

...or maybe Victor Montagliani isn't the biggest fish in the pond at this point and has reached the limit of his power and influence? Time will tell. An absence of any public statement from him to explain the abrupt u-turn would speak volumes.

So, CONCACAF has given one year sanction, subject to FIFA approval:

So I guess that means "Mission Roster Raid" is complete and CPL has all of the players they want. Excellent. Can't wait for the announcements.

Yeah, kind of puts the boots to that whole theory.  Not that anyone took it too seriously...

Precedents are important, like concacaf telling Ottawa they won’t be sanctioned.  That precedent is now on the record.

So you think they’re going to be grandfathered?  They’ve been in USL TWO SEASONS.

I guess rather than being "Grandfathered" in to USL they'll be "Toddlered" in to USL.

Has it not been claimed that players and their agents were being told for many weeks now by CanPL that the Fury wouldn't be sanctioned? I think Duane Rollins was also peddling that line. That wasn't necessarily just an issue over the last few days.

If I follow the chess game correctly, the next move will be finding a different ownership group in Ottawa. That will be the checkmate.

That’s the short chess game and they may not even need to do that if OSEG comes to their senses (maybe they already have).

The long game for VM is really sexy if you follow my idea.  VM should pull Ottawa and get MLS all scared.  Then turn around and tell MLS “you can keep your Welsh exception in MLS ... but Canadians need to be domestic like Welsh players in the EPL”  CHECK MATE.  Canada soccer is set for life.

Theres no escaping it, we’re going to get ours.

If Ottawa has the value they claim then why not sell the franchise and then set up in the CPL? The USL website says they expect expansion teams in coming years so there must be willing buyers. Or is it the team is worth nothing and the real value is not revenue from fans or media but thecapital they collect and the costs tbey avoid by being in the protective umbrella and pyramid scheme of the MLS USL.

Keep lovong those who dont love you back

Actually, for better or for worst, it kind of is communism. World football does not operate like your typical North American league. A club does not get to decide which league to play in based on proper business metrics. FIFA decides. Unilaterally. If that's not appetizing, see CSL. I think the writing is on the wall, friend. In 2020, USL will not be in Ottawa.

CONCACAF has now released a statement.  This is a hoot.

https://www.concacaf.com/en/article/concacaf-statement-ottawa-fury-fc

The part about FIFA makes it seem like FIFA is now going to deny them.

But seriously what is happening?  It’s always the Fury with all these wild conspiracy leaks and jumping the gun and spreading false info.

Miami (Friday, December 21, 2018) – Concacaf understands that Ottawa Fury FC has withdrawn its unnecessary application to CAS for provisional measures. As we had made clear to the club prior to its commencement of its complaint to CAS, our official process began on December 17, when Concacaf received the application from the CSA seeking Concacaf’s authorization for the club to participate in the USL 2019 season only.  That very same day, we explained to the club that we were expediting the request and that we expected to conclude the review and decision-making process imminently. Ottawa Fury FC’s filing with CAS and their extensive public relations campaign was a needless and misinformed distraction during this process.  Although Concacaf, the CSA and USSF have given their respective authorizations, before the club may participate in the USL for the 2019 season, the Ottawa Fury FC still is required to obtain authorization from FIFA under the clear mandate of FIFA Article 73.

No it doesn't. That's just the next step that happens every year for all Canadian clubs playing out.

It doesnt?

surely you know what that article refers to..

Your assumption that it was smooth sailing through Miami is clearly off BBTB if they felt the need to reiterate that mandate.  Why mention it at all if it’s no big deal and passed with flying colours?  Maybe VM wants it to go to FIFA... maybe no CONCACAF people want to be involved and we’re going to have some FIFA officials do the dirty work.

The descriptor that it is a CLEAR mandate is certainly interesting.  Why not just call it a mandate?  To be continued...

Damn.  1st Blockbuster and now USL!?

That's it.  No more franchise schemes for me, don't care how "bargain" priced they are.  I'm putting the lot into Bitcoins.  That's the ticket.  No place to go but up!
