Generating Press

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys, I'm still pretty new to the forum here, but I gotta say I'm pretty hooked.  Just have a few things I would like to say, and hopefully you will understand their relevance by the end:

I grew up an average Canadian Soccer fan.  That is to say, a fan of soccer, but not really a fan of the Canadian National Team.  Was it my fault?  Partially yes, but not entirely.  My dad was never really a big sports fan, being basically a casual fan of the jays, oilers, leafs and Canadian Hockey, so I wasn't really inundated with being a fan of any one sport or team in particular.  I was in the camp of "I'd root for Canada when we were good", as were most of my soccer playing buddies in YT.  I know that doesn't sit well with everyone on this forum, but I'm going to try to make a point(hopefully of optimism).  I was aware that the Canadian National Team was pretty, well, terrible, but was always hopeful about a day when I could be proud to call myself a Canadian Soccer fan.

I grew up following Arsenal, and after their incredible undefeated season in 2003-2004, I was hooked at 12.  My friends followed AC Milan, Chelsea and the like.  The only knowledge I had of the voyageurs was some vague inclination that it had something to do with Canoes, the pioneers, and, for some reason, the Canadian National Soccer Team.

I was born in 1989, so I have absolutely no recollection of the miracle run that landed CanMNT in their only ever World Cup.  All I can do is try to imagine the cinderella-like story that got us there.

The last couple of years, I was just going about my life, trying to figure out what my purpose in life was, spending ungodly amounts on tuition and the general debauchery of a 18-23 year old.  Enter Depression.  Spending way too much time pouring over the potential scenarios for world disaster, all the things I couldn't possibly fix about the world, all my own self defeating patterns of thought.  Whats the point of this?  I don't know, perhaps I just want you guys to know the guy who's got a bunch of crazy ideas to help push the Voyaguers into popular culture, so it isn't just some asshole on the internet who's a little too keen.

If anyone else has a story they're willing to share, I'd love to hear it.  The fact that I can even share this much with a big group of people on the internet and expect not to get flamed, I think, is a testament to just how awesome this community is (quite frankly, I've been amazed by you guys in my couple of months here).

Which brings me to my actual point.  It is an absolute shame that it took me this long to hear about you guys.  An absolute travesty.  We(and forgive me for counting myself among you this quickly, but as I said y'all seem like an accepting bunch) NEED to get this out there.  Whatever it takes.

There is something special about Canada.  Simultaneously our greatest strength, and our greatest weakness, its our heterogeneity.  US has the melting pot, we have the cultural mosaic.  Canada literally means "The village" and the voyageurs is a little cross section of that.

So what I'm hoping to inspire here is a pie-in-the-sky discussion about ways to generate press.  The crazier the better.  How can we make enough of a racket that the whole country stands up and takes notice.  I'll kick it off with a few ideas but lets get creative and use that improve Yes-and mentality.  No idea is too far-fetched to run with, if its YOUR idea.

1.  Stickers - posters are alright, but they aren't nearly as versatile.  The legality of plastering every surface in your town may be a little questionable, but in terms of effectiveness, it can be put places that posters can't.  We all should be carrying around a pocketful of voyageurs logos at all times(IMO) for these types of places.

2.  The Voyageurs Network - I recently noticed people offering to house other voyaguers if they were willing to make the trip to see the WCQ in Van.  Thats something worth talking about.  I find it hard to believe that fans of any other national team would be willing to do the same thing, at least on the scale that we do(and if they do, well then we can omit that part of the story).  We should flush this out, and make it part of our advertising(perhaps on said stickers?) and create a sort of BnB/meet fellow canadians sort of angle.  Perhaps at a larger scale there might be issues, but thats a bridge we could cross when we got to it.

3.  Vice sports - I've heard plenty of chatter about SN and TSN not giving adequate coverage to the CanMNT and the voyageurs, and while there seems to be nothing that we can really do about that, this "Voyaguers Network" seems like a story right up the alley of Vice.  They tend to be willing to cover things that the main networks are unwilling to go out on a limb for.

4. Stacking the Social Media Deck - I recently watched the Julian Assange Movie, and was fascinated by how he was able to create something so massive (Wikileaks) which so relatively few people at first.  I know it's a little, well, unethical, but what about each voyageur creating 3 or 4 fake facebook accounts to pad both our group, and like totals on important CanMNT team/Voyaguer articles.  Its a little bit of work, but if we did it en masse it could make us seem even "Cooler" than we are.

I don't know, maybe some of these are dumb, but as I said before, whats the harm in getting a bit crazy when you're brainstorming.  FFS it's called "brainstorming"

Cheers folks, as far as I'm concerned we have until Nov 13 to make as much F@#$ing racket as we can.  Busy as beavers.

Also, just as an aside - has anyone read Malcolm Gladwell's Tipping point, and knows what I'm talking about when I say the "Strength of Weak Ties"? - Might be interesting read if people haven't when it comes to generating rumours about V's/the team.  Cheers to anyone who stuck through the whole post haha

This is a great idea, and I'm sure if someone has some ties at TSN or SN we could get a story on their websites. Also I'm sure TSN would be willing to do a 30 or 60-minute documentary on the history's of the V's

I just saw this now.

1) Have stickers been done before? I like stickers but I don't think they would have too great of an effect. People(myself included) seem to disregard this kind of stuff plastered on walls. It would need to be accompanied by a blurb to make a connection of what the voyageurs do and you might as well put posters at that point.

2) I like the Voyageurs network idea.

3) Although I despise VICE, it does seem like platform that can be beneficial to us. How would we go about that?

4) We dont need people to like articles/posts o social media 3 or 4 times, we just need all the voyageurs to do it once. When stuff goes out on voyageurs to be shared on fb or twitter, no one shares it, comments, likes,re tweets, etc. It is tough to do that as we obviously cant control people's social media lives.

Would be nice to get the csa to rent an advertising board in a visible area in each of the three major metropolitan areas in Canada. Probably out of our funding limits. Maybe we can get some of the main soccer personalities here(Jack, sharman, devos, etc) to give us random shutouts during their premier league or champions league broadcasts lol. Just stick it there.

I guess it depends on the person.  If they're put in smart places, I tend to read stickers(aka sitting on a public toilet, back of a bus).  Basically the times when you gotta sit around and wait anyways seem like the best spots.  I mean assuming they're cheap to mass produce I'm not sure I totally agree with you, but like I said, I think it depends on the person.  And hey, at least it gives it kinda an underground type of feel.

I both love and hate Vice, and I'm not really sure how we would do it, but yea it seems like the best option especially combined with the voyageurs network idea.  I'm not really sure how to go about it other than organizing a co-ordinated spam effort.  But this is something we can look into.

You're probably right regarding social media, Personally I never see much voyageurs Social Media Activity(although too little is probably better than too much)  I dunno who is in charge of it, but it doesn't seem super visible at the moment.

Realistically, the next 10 days will determine how much press needs to be generated.

That is the downside of international soccer - we could beat Honduras 5-0 and win in El Salvador and no matter what we aren't playing again here until late March (barring a dome friendly which has never happened before).

You're not wrong.  I guess I just wish we could co-ordinate a little/all had the tools to do as much as possible.  Like I know results mean more than anything, but there is a certain allure of creating the vibe of an underground community, which I don't wanna see us underestimate.

Idk, perhaps I'm naive though.
