Callum Irving

Recommended Posts

As I said in the MOACA thread, I'm glad to see Irving land somewhere after the draft. USL was the likely destination for him had he been drafted, so thumbs up from me. Hopefully he can get some starts and work his way back into the MLS picture over time.

I think this is a good indication that signing that contract with MLS is the reason he didn't get drafted. Hopefully he sees some minutes and we can have 5 starting keepers in USL

Given how easily Sean Melvin won the USL starting job Irving probably should have taken the contract offer from Vancouver. Much like Mozzi Gyorio and SKC a few years ago those offers don't come around often and there is not a lot of mobility from the lower leagues to MLS.

Signed with Rio Grande Valley FC Toros (Houston Dynamo USL reserve team). Earned a shutout tonight vs OKC Energy FC.

"Devin Perales and Calle Brown have split the majority of the starts in goal for the Toros this season, but Callum Irving’s second appearance of the season was an impressive one for the side. The former PDL standout showed excellent consistency in goal as the Toros claimed their fourth shutout of the season, both in his shot-stopping and communicating with his back line as RGVFC took a solid victory."

If he seems the starting spot, he's in a better position than the GK prospects in the Canadian teams, oddly enough

No he wouldn't be in a better spot. The Canadian keepers are all playing a lot on their club's USL teams and are already 2nd or 3rd keeper on the MLS team, similar to Calle Brown with Houston. Irving is not even signed with Houston but including him in their keeper roster he is currently the number 5 keeper. He has to prove himself better than both Perales and Brown and get signed even to get to the position that our Canadian keepers on the Canadian teams are in. The only advantage he has is that Houston is not a very good team and don't have a clear number 1 keeper so that MLS starting spot is a bit less unattainable than it is on the Canadian teams but Irving will still have to be very impressive to have a shot at that especially not being under contract to the team.

Did Houston lose a keeper to injury or other reason? I assume Tyler Deric is a lock for their starter. Maybe they don't like Joe Willis as their 3rd keeper since he choked with his chance at DC. The other keeper they have is Calle Brown who is a year older but has similar to better experience than Irving. Not sure where he fits.

Deric and Willis are #1 and #2, with Calle as #3. Deric and Calle are both injured.

Remember the old thread when we were discussing who and when the next CDN keeper would play in MLS?  Who would have thought it might be Houston that give a CDN kid a chance and not the 3 CDN MLS clubs??  Besides this season Willis has only had a handful of games.   CROSS YOUR FINGERS!!

The recovery save on Zebie was very good...only because he gave up a very poor rebound with his body moving to his right.

He was leaning the wrong way sure but he was always giving up a rebound on a blast right at his chest from that close.
