Which Clubs Do You Support?

Recommended Posts

Club you supported as a kid: Newcastle United

Domestic club you support now: You know that small semi-pro club out of Regina that has the 3000 seat stadium in the park, the one that exists in my day dreams...

Foreign club(s) you support now: Newcastle and Nantes Atlantique

Favourite lower league club: I don't really like any lower league clubs, at least not to follow their results. For general non interest and dodgey o'l country origin myths it'd have to be Sterling Albion.

Guilty pleasure you'd only admit to your closest internet friends: Barcalona, I enjoy watching them destroy teams these days, and I usually dislike the biggest teams so that's out of character.

Most Hated Club(s): Man U, then its more about politics (Lazio), style (Bolton under Allidice/Megson) or local rivals (absurdly Rennes [i mean what do I have against Rennes, really] Sunderland, and Concacaf)

National Team(s) other than Canada: I'll cheer for whichever West African team is the most stylish in the world cup.

Best kit (worn by a team you don't support): I like St Etienne and Real Betis

Worst kit (even if it is a team you support): I don't know, the 90's everyone. Um... 97-98 Newcastle had a navy blue second strip with a orange and green stripe running down the right-hand side it was unfortunate, just like that season.

Best ground you've been to: Westpac stadium Wellington NZ

Worst ground you've been to: I haven't been many places, the only soccer venue I really dislike is the Credit Union Event-Plex.

Club you supported as a kid: Latter 70s Arsenal, especially when Liam Brady was in his pomp, and of course the Whitecaps.

Foreign club(s) you support now: Basically any team that's fun to watch from a technical/offensive standpoint, so I suppose Barca falls into that category.

Most Hated Club(s): Don't have a hate on much for clubs anymore, though I used to dislike Man Utd when I was younger. Of national teams, probably the USA and Chile

National Team(s) other than Canada: Glad to see Spain finally shake off the "choke" moniker. And I have to admit a respect for the Germans' ability to get to the finals of the Euros and WCs on a consistent basis over the last half century. Currently, I'd love to see an African side finally take home the WC in 2010.

Best kit (worn by a team you don't support): Pass

Worst kit (even if it is a team you support): Two stand out: Man Utd's third kit they wore for exactly 1/2 a game before Fergie ordered a strip change at halftime; Hull City's gay porno-style tiger striped number from the 80s looked pretty grim.

Best ground you've been to: Highbury

Favourite player: Michael Essien: Skill, power, stamina, versatility. Hopefully he'll captain the 2010 World Cup Champions, Ghana, beating the Hun in the final!

Guilty pleasure...: If we can't get our sh*t together and qualify for the WC, I would at least like to see Mexico get their sh*t together again and knock the Yanks off the top of the CONCACAF perch.

Clubs that I support:

Real Zaragoza

Toronto FC

Partick Thistle

FC St. Pauli

I have to use a bit of a time line here:

Growing up in Toronto but not following soccer until I was into my twenties didn't really give me a home team. I started dating my girl almost 4 years ago and inherited her home club, Real Zaragoza. It was great having a club for the first time and now that I live here I can support them in person, although they're crap right now and fighting to get promoted back to the Primera.

Lived in Ireland for a while but followed La Liga and Premier League on tv.

We lived in Glasgow for a year and I honestly couldn't bring myself to support either of the Old Firm. Too much animosity for a Canadian lad and to be honest I didn't like either of them. I was turned on to Partick Thistle by my boss there (a second division Glasgow team) and I've never looked back when it comes to Scottish Footy. Go Jags.

Now that we finally have a club back home, I'm TFC for life by default. Yet another not-so-great club on a list of not-so-great clubs (right now anyhow), but in the words of Moe, "Sorry Homer, I was born a snake handler, and I'll die a snake handler".

National Teams:

Canada

Spain

Canada. The only country I truly support. I have in the last four years (see above for reasons) supported Spain. a)this was before they were kicking ass, and B) should Canada ever face them have no doubt about who I'll be cheering for. That also applies to TFC and Real Zaragoza, although that might be even more unlikely that they would face each other. Probably not actually...

Club you supported as a kid: Didn't really. By early teens, the Whitecaps. Also liked Liverpool.

Domestic club you support now: FC Barcelona (domestic for me), Vancouver Whitecaps (multiple domesticity). Also support Barça futsal, basketball, handball even. We Barça club members are a sect.

I also follow and support a number of lower division teams. UE Poble Sec is a fifth tier side in my Barcelona neighbourhood of the same name, the owner is a crook and has ruined the fan base. Watched them for two decades. An 8th tier team about to promote is APA Poble Sec, play at the same small field. Actually run by an alliance of Parent Teacher Associations, and a sponsor with deep pockets, the revived local beer company Moritz.

Near my wife's village in the Pyrenees I follow Manlleu, a fourth tier side with a chance at promotion to 2B this year. 15 years ago played a promotion playoff to get into Spanish second division, losing to the Real Madrid B team. And in 6th tier, in a town of only 700 inhabitants, a little miracle: Sant Feliu Sasserra. I love lower division semi-pro football.

Most games seen this year have been my son's futsal matches. I can proudly announce that his u10 futsal team has qualified for the final 16 knock-out round, the only survivors out of 120 teams. Now that is exciting footie!

Foreign club(s) you support now: Foreign meaning abroad, I support Liverpool in England and pretty much just them. In world leagues I support, from a distance this time, Boca, AC Milan, Oporto, Celtic.

Favourite lower league club: UE Poble Sec.

Guilty pleasure you'd only admit to your closest internet friends: Despite being a die-hard FCB fan, I actually like Espanyol. No animosity there at all. I am not anti-Espanyolista. Maybe because like Barça they take care of their academy and have young "local" players on the first team. Or because I am a sucker for anything local.

National Team: Canada first, then Spain. If neither go through, whoever plays the best ball deserves to win, for the good of the game.

Club you supported as a kid: When I came around to paying attention to football it was United with King Eric Cantona because that is all that was on my tv for footie save the odd 86'ers game on TSN.

Domestic club you support now: Whitecaps

Foreign club you support now: Rangers, FC Bayern, & Tottenham Hotspur

Favourite lower league club: ST Pauli in Germany's 2.Bundesliga as former Cap Sulentic when there and we Southsiders made friends with "Klaus" who is an awesome guy and fanatic supporter of St Pauli, I know they are now in the third tier, but were in the 3rd and 4th (?) not too lang ago.

Guilty pleasure you'd only admit to your closest Internet friends: I enjoy watching Chelsea play, and had been supporting them until Roman came along. But I still enjoy watching their matches.

Teams you hate (in order of hatedness): Celtic, Man United, Real Madrid, Portland Timbers, Toronto FC

National Teams you Support Other Than Canada: Scotland and The Netherlands.

not a Man. United fan. Sorry but how can you possibly cheer for them??

The key was "clubs with great support even when they're failing". The clubs that can get 30,000 a game even in the (old) third division. It's more the supporters I admire, rather than the club itself.

Plus any United supporter looks at Liverpool and Arsenal matches on the sched before City.

And that's also appropriate since I, like most United supporters, don't live in Manchester ;)

Club you supported as a kid: Toronto Lynx

Domestic club you support now: nominally Toronto FC, I don't go to games but follow them and want them to do well

Foreign club(s) you support now: Aston Villa, Barnsley, any team employing Canadians in England or Germany

Most diliked club: Spurs, Man Utd, Real Madrid

Favourite lower league club: Anyone employing a Canadian in Europe

National team: Canada only

Best kit: Oxford United from 1999, it's really classy and nice looking

Worst kit: Shamrock Rovers, didn't look so hideous on the internet when bought it on sale mail-ordered from Ireland

Guilty pleasures you'd only admit to your closest internet friends: back in the Lynx days I always wanted to play in the annual Lynx mascot game, I thought it'd be funny. As a kid, I used to write Canadians abroad for autographs. Like Ed, I have enjoyed years (not 50) of UK-less WC finals much to the chagrin of many of my close friends.

Club I supported as a kid: None. Didn't watch footy growing up really.

Domestic club I support now: Toronto FC. Although I'd passively support whichever Canadian club represented Canada in the CL.

Foreign club(s) I support now: None. Chivas Guadalajara but it's more of a joke. Based on the team being the "goats". lol

Find it hard to support a foreign club since I have no attachment to any club for any reason.

My favourite lower league clubs: University of Guelph Gryphons. Alma mater though.

My guilty pleasure club(s): None.

Most Hated Clubs (in order of hatedness): KKKrew.

National team(s) other than Canada: Mexico mainly, due to my background and being on the same continent (but I'm not Mexican, even though everyone thinks I am, lol). During the WC, I'll cheer on any Hispanic team. But when Canada makes it, I'll cheer on Canada 100%. Red and white!!!

Favourite player(s): JDG, DeRo.

Best Kit (old or new): Current TFC Kit :)

Worst Kit (old or new): Not horrible, the the CMNT kit, needs an overhaul...

Hey this is a really cool post.

Club you supported as a kid: Norwich City (When I was living in England I was never into football, but the first match I ever watched was when Norwich City beat Bayern Munich in the UEFA cup.)

Domestic club you support now: Toronto FC (given that is my hometown)

Foreign club(s) you support now: Everton FC (Lost my patience with Norwich and began supporting Everton because)

Favourite lower league club: AFC Wimbledon (Where I lived, while in the UK)

Guilty pleasure you'd only admit to your closest internet friends: Soccer is Canada's second sport

Not sure why I haven’t done thins until now...

Club I supported as a kid: Toronto Blizzard (when very young) and Man City (a little later on)

Domestic club I support now: Toronto FC.

Foreign club(s) I support now: City ‘Till I Die

My favourite lower league clubs: Any with Canadians, or a great back-story. For instance, I’m pulling for AFC Wimbledon to get to the Football League right now. It was the same for Aldershot Town a couple years ago.

My guilty pleasure club(s): Barcelona. I can’t fully cheer for a g-14 club (unless City becomes one) due to my allergic reaction to glory hunting. However, I can appreciate the history, philosophy and mystic of Barca – not to mention the skill of the current edition.

Most Hated Clubs (in order of hatedness): United. Although that has more to do with its fans. No offense Sam.

National team(s) other than Canada: Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Northern Ireland and, once a certain someone retires from international football, England.

Favourite player(s): DeRo, Stephen Ireland
